September 21 vs. the Detroit Tigers

Today's Game Rating:
-6 STARS
Anybody who can blow a six-run lead in the ninth deserves to go six stars in the hole.

Short Take:Have we hit bottom now? The Sox took a 6-0 lead against the Tigers into the ninth, only to cough it up and lose in 7-6 in 12 innings. We know how Charlie Brown feels.

The White Sox went into the bottom of the ninth in Detroit leading the Tigers 6-0. What could go wrong? Let's check in with a authority on bad fortune from American literature.

"Sometimes I lie awake at night, and I ask, 'Where have I gone wrong?' Then a voice says to me, 'This is going to take more than one night." That observation was made by Charlie Brown, given voice by Charles Schulz in "Peanuts." Charlie Brown had a bad ballclub too.

Charlie Brown's voice in his head was probably right about it taking more than one night. But one night tonight was enough.

The Sox lost to the Tigers 7-6 in 12 innings. But that's not the highlight of the story: Chris Sale worked 7-2/3 innings, gave up no runs, only four hits, seven strikeouts, and came out of the game in the eighth with a six-run lead. And he didn't win.

The White Sox went into the bottom of the ninth in Detroit leading the Tigers 6-0. Did I say that already? Sorry...I'm disoriented. There was that moment as the bottom of the ninth began that I thought I could start writing about the long overdue win for Chris Sale. Then something happened.

That something was Nate Jones pitching in the ninth, entrusted with Sale's 6-0 lead. And what happened was a triple, a single, another single, a double, a homer, and suddenly it's 6-5 with no outs in the Tigers' ninth.

Addison Reed arrived because it became a save situation. Reed gave up three walks, a bunt and a sacrifice fly, and the game became tied 6-6. Donnie Veal was summoned to replace Reed. He got the third out and everyone trudged on to extra innings.

Like a tedious ping-pong match the Sox and Tigers poked at each other for two more innings. Jake Petricka was pitching in the twelfth and gave up a leadoff walk, an intentional walk, and another walk for good measure. Omar Infante singled with the bases loaded and the humiliation was complete.

We've all heard the numbers and we all saw this season fall off the tracks a long time ago. Rick Hahn is a solid baseball guy and I suspect he has an interest in building his legacy as something more than just the shepherd of this diseased flock. His words convey a desire to build a winning ball club out of the broken parts of this one. I'm sure he's sincere. As this season has slogged on, that sentiment has made me think more about Charlie Brown. His ball team was also astoundingly bad and was a frequent subject of his tragic punch lines.

I think Charlie Brown was channeling Rick Hahn after his team lost 184-0: "How can we lose when we're so sincere?"

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
Two Thumbs Down! "Stoney, this team is so bad I can't remember how many decades I've been in baseball."
