Gillaspie Giveth, but Reed Taketh Away

September 7 at Baltimore Orioles

Today's Game Rating:
0 STAR
I'd give 'em one for effort, but Reed broke my heart, and I'm not feeling very generous.

Short Take: Sox battle against tough Orioles team and take them to extras; Conor Gillaspieís pinch hit home run gives the Sox the lead and Sox fans a glimmer of hope, but Reed canít suppress the Orioles.

Does almost winning count for anything? Can we give the White Sox a pat on the back for the good old ďcollege tryĒ? Never mind - Iíll answer my own question: Nope, nuh-uh, no way. Itís still a loss.

The White Sox extended their losing streak to 9 games today, falling to the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 in 10 innings.

Hector Santiago kept the Sox in the game, despite sporadic trouble with command and throwing a lot of pitches. He exited after the 5th inning, allowing 7 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Jake Petricka, Matt Lindstrom, and David Purcey served up some adequate relief, while Nate Jones put in an extra solid performance for 1.2 innings.

Paul Konerko was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, and Dayan Viciedo went 2 for 3 with a home run. But once again, it just wasnít quite enough to get the job done today.

The Sox committed 3 errors in this game. Although none of those errors contributed to the outcome of the game, it was frustrating to watch. Two of the errors were Josh Phegley throws, and the other was a fielding error committed with a runner on 3rd by second baseman Leury Garcia. That fielding error could easily have cost the Sox the game in the 8th inning.

But most of what you need to know about this game happened in the 10th. With the scored tied 2-2, in the top of the 10th, Conor Gillapsie hit a LONG pinch-hit home run that put the Sox in the lead.

But we should have taken a picture of that lead, folks, as it vanished nearly as quickly as it happened. In the bottom of the 10th, Addison Reed came in to close it out. He got JJ Hardy to ground out, but then gave up a single to Henry Urrutia. Nick Markakis then popped up to short left field and Alejandro De Aza couldnít make the play. This put runners at the corners with one out. Reed then struck out Nate McLouth, but Markakis took second base on the strikeout. Matt Wieters then singled on a 1-2 slider to right field, deep enough to score both runners. And thus endeth Addison Reedís sixth blown save of the season.

Thereís not a whole lot else to say about this game and this team that hasnít already been said. The White Sox are really good at one thing: creative ways to lose games.

Tomorrow is the final game of the series. Iím looking forward to another sweepÖI MEAN, another sweet game of White Sox baseball, and hopefully a winner to end this road trip from hell. Andre Rienzo (1-1, 5.03 ERA) faces Bud Norris (10-10, 4.01 ERA). Game time is 12:35 PM CST on Comcast SportsNet.

WSI's
Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
Game was on Fox, so Hawk and Stone took the day off - but Fox says: "Thanks, White Sox - thumbs up for the exciting 10th inning and the implosion that led to an Orioles walkoff win, which is alway great television!" (To which Hawk says, "DADGUMMIT!")
