Mixed Bag For Rookie Debuts

Sept. 4 at N.Y. Yankees

Short Take: Marcus Semien had a couple hits and an RBI in his major league debut, but rookie hurlers Erik Johnson and Daniel Webb could not stop New York as the White Sox suffered a 6-5 loss in the Bronx.

The White Sox became the first team this year to have three players make their major league debuts in the same game. I guess we'll always have that to take with us when this sad season ends, but the result was the same as usual Wednesday night as the South Siders suffered their sixth consecutive loss, a 6-5 defeat at the hands of the New York Yankees.

First for some good news: Infielder Marcus Semien got the start at third base and went 2 for 4. He also picked up his first major league RBI. The night didn't go quite as well for pitchers Erik Johnson and Daniel Webb. Johnson (0-1), a 23-year-old right-hander who posted a 1.96 ERA in 24 combined starts at Charlotte and Birmingham this season, allowed five runs -- three earned -- and seven hits over six innings. His own throwing error in the fourth inning opened the door for a four-run New York rally.

Webb, a 24-year-old reliever, replaced Johnson in the seventh inning and walked the first batter he faced. That runner would eventually come around to score, and the Sox found themselves in a 6-1 hole going into the eighth inning.

The Sox made it interesting with a four-run outburst against New York starter C.C. Sabathia (13-11) and reliever David Robertson in the top of the eighth. Sabathia gave up a pair of singles to Gordon Beckham and Paul Konerko. With one out, Avisail Garcia greeted Robertson with an RBI single that made it 6-2. After Jeff Keppinger made the second out, Dayan Viciedo walked to load the bases. Josh Phegley found a hanging 0-2 slider from Robertson to his liking and singled back up the middle to cut the Sox deficit to 6-4. Semien followed with an RBI single to make it 6-5.

That ended Robertson's night as New York manager Joe Girardi summoned future Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera from the bullpen. With the potential tying run on second and the potential go-ahead run on first, Rivera struck Alejandro De Aza out looking. There's no question strike three was outside, but Rivera got the benefit of the call. Definitely a Yankee call right there. Rivera later worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 41st save of the season.

The loss drops the Sox to 0-6 on this 10-game road trip. The death march will continue Thursday night when the Sox open a four-game set against the Baltimore Orioles. Left-hander Jose Quintana (7-5, 3.69 ERA) will make the start for the South Siders. He'll be opposed by right-hander Miguel Gonzalez. Game time is 6:05 CDT. You can watch it all on Comcast SportsNet.

WSI's
Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
I tell you what, Dan Plesac, it's too bad you didn't get to the big leagues until 1986. If you had come up in 1983, you would have been able to face YAZ!
