Sale Gives Houston A Problem

Aug. 28 vs. Houston

Today's Game Rating:
5 STARS
Great pitching, good defense and a clutch hit late. No complaints tonight.

Short Take: Chris Sale records 12 strikeouts and dominates the hapless Astros as the White Sox record a 6-1 victory.

The meatheads who want to shut down Chris Sale for the rest of the year won't be happy with what happened Wednesday night at U.S. Cellular Field. The White Sox ace was coming off his worst start of the season, a loss to the Texas Rangers last Friday, but he returned to form in a big way in this outing.

Sale struck out 12 over eight dominant innings and picked up his 10th victory of the season as the South Siders defeated the Houston Astros, 6-1. From the very start, you knew this was going to be Sale's night. He struck out the side in the first inning and fanned seven of the first 10 hitters he faced. He allowed just four hits and walked only two on the evening. He also became the first pitcher in Sox history to have four games with 12 strikeouts or more in the same season.

Yeah, I'd say Sale (10-12) proved that poor outing against the Rangers was nothing more than a hiccup in an otherwise strong season. With the win, the Sox (56-76) finished up a 4-2 homestand. They have won 10 of their last 12 and have gone 16-7 since Aug. 5. Too little, too late? Well, of course, but it's still nice to see the guys playing better baseball these days.

For awhile, it looked like Sale might not get the run support he needed to win this game. Houston starter Jarred Cosart allowed 12 baserunners (seven hits, five walks) over six innings, but the Sox managed just one run off him. The South Siders loaded the bases with nobody out in the first inning, but managed just a single tally on an RBI single by Paul Konerko.

The game remained 1-0 until the seventh when Sale made his lone mistake of the night, a high changeup to Houston first baseman Chris Carter, who hit a long home run to left field to tie the game at 1-1.

But the Sox would answer in the bottom of the inning, thanks to the wildness of Houston reliever Lucas Harrell (6-15). Leury Garcia worked a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw by the Houston catcher. Jeff Keppinger delivered the go-ahead RBI with a sacrifice fly to shallow center field, with Garcia narrowly beating a good throw to the plate by Houston outfielder Brandon Barnes.

The inning continued as Harrell walked both Adam Dunn and Konerko with two outs. That set the stage for Avasail Garcia, who smashed his first home run in a White Sox uniform, a 3-run bomb to center field that gave the home team a comfortable 5-1 lead.

The Sox added a sixth run in the eighth. Dayan Viciedo had a leadoff double and later scored on a sac fly by Leury Garcia.

Sale started the ninth inning, but he walked the leadoff hitter. Manager Robin Ventura summoned Matt Lindstrom from the bullpen. The right-hander immediately induced a double-play ball and worked a scoreless inning to close out the win.

The Sox will now enjoy an off day Thursday before starting a 10-game road trip Friday night in Boston. Hector Santiago (4-7, 3.25 ERA) will get the start for the South Siders. He'll be opposed by former Cubbie douchebag Ryan Dempster (6-9, 4.77 ERA). The game will air at 6 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet.

WSI's
Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
I tell you what, Stone Pony, we normally just talk about YAZ! but that Avasail Garcia reminds me of Jose Canseco when he first came in the league.
