Only 35 More Losses Until 100

July 31 at Cleveland

It's just a bad horror film at this point.

Short Take: The beat goes on as the Sox blow a lead in the ninth inning and get walked off in Cleveland. Again.

I think most of us are resigned to the fate that the White Sox are going to lose nearly every day for the rest of the season. It would be nice, though, if they'd just get blown out for a change and stop losing in such gut-wrenching fashion.

The Sox dropped their sixth straight game Wednesday night, this time falling 6-5 in 10 innings to the Cleveland Indians. In each of the last four games, the opposition has scored the winning run in its last at-bat, adding to the misery of a 2013 season that can only be described as an express elevator straight to hell.

Carlos Santana's game-winning home run in the bottom of the 10th inning off Dylan Axelrod (3-7) was the latest punch to the gut. This one was especially irritating because the Sox had a 5-3 lead in the ninth inning and should have won. Naturally, they didn't.

It's too bad because the offense showed some signs of life for once. The Sox rallied from a 3-0 deficit, eventually grabbing the lead on Jeff Keppinger's two-run, two-out, two-strike single with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth.

All the Sox needed was three outs from closer Addison Reed, but of course, he couldn't get the job done. If you must know how it went down, Michael Brantley doubled. Jason Giambi was hit by a pitch. Drew Stubbs reached on a bunt to load the bases with nobody out. Michael Bourn and Jason Kipnis hit sacrifice flies, the second of which tied the game at 5-5 and sent the contest to extra innings.

The Sox went quietly in the top of the 10th against Cleveland closer Chris Perez (4-1). That set the stage for Axelrod to come on and serve up a meatball to Santana. Game over. The Sox are now 2-10 against the Indians this year. They are 16-41 in their last 57 games and 40-65 overall. Ninety losses is a given. One hundred losses is a real possibility.

The Sox will try to salvage the finale of this four-game set Thursday afternoon when they send ace Chris Sale (6-10, 2.69 ERA) to the mound. He'll be opposed by Cleveland ace Justin Masterson (12-7, 3.42 ERA). What do you suppose the odds are Sale gets beat 1-0 again? If you can still stomach this crap, it's an early 11 a.m. start. You can watch on Comcast SportsNet.

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
I tell you what, Wimpy, I don't blame Stone Pony for getting sick watching this team. Not even YAZ could save this group.
