Sale Completely Let Down

July 27th vs. the Kansas City Royals

Today's Game Rating:
1 STAR
Chris Sale put on a pitching performance and KC's Lorenzo Cain put on a fielding exhibition. That's worth at least one star.

Short Take:Despite pitching a 1-run complete game, Chris Sale loses again as the no-offense White Sox are shutout 1-0 by the Royals.

What does Chris Sale have to do to get a win? Tonight he pitched a complete game, gave up one run, struck out seven, walked only one, yet got the loss as the Kansas City Royals shutout the Sox 1-0.

Sale is the Sisyphus of Major League Baseball. In Greek mythology Sisyphus was condemned to push a boulder up a hill just to watch it roll back down and then do it again and again throughout eternity. Sale has pushed the rock of no-support frustration up the nine-inning hill again and again, just to watch it fall to a record of 6-10. He pushes that rock and watches it fall despite an ERA of 2.69, a WHIP of 1.01, and nearly ten strikeouts per nine innings.

He's not going to need a trainer. He's going to need a therapist.

I suppose the Sox deserve some credit for consistency; they haven't been scoring runs all season. They now sit at 21 games below .500, so far from respectability that even the seagulls don't stop at the ballpark anymore. If a Sox starter and his relievers pitched a shutout we'd be looking at a record for the longest game because the the Sox wouldn't have scored.

"Alphonse and Gaston" was a comic strip that featured two bumbling characters who couldn't accomplish anything because they kept deferring to each other: "After you, Alphonse." "No, after you, my dear Gaston." The 2013 White Sox are like that. They're simply too polite to offend the other team with any offense, so they bow out of the way and say, "After you, my dear Royals." The Sox need to be characters in their own comic strip. Carl Skanberg's White Sox comics were funny when they were winning. Too bad he's not currently doing them -- they'd be utterly hilarious now.

Note that I've chewed up four full paragraphs without referring to this game. There's not much to say except that Sale is a great pitcher who deserves better. The Royals' one run came in the sixth when Lorenzo "Willie Mays" Cain doubled home Eric Hosmer, who'd singled earlier in the inning. Cain was worth the price of admission tonight because of his remarkable catches in center field. He came out of the game in the eighth after injuring himself running into the wall to make one of his highlight-reel catches.

If Sisyphus is the mythological equivalent of Chris Sale, this year's team should have one too. I nominate Erebus, the Greek deity of darkness and shadow.

Two Thumbs Down. "Mercy! This team is so weak I'd be embarrassed to tell Yaz about it."
