More of the Usual Crap

July 3 vs. Baltimore

People would probably rather watch "Gigli" at this point.

Short Take: The absence of Jesse Crain is felt immediately as the Sox bullpen crumbles in the eighth inning.

The White Sox battled the Baltimore Orioles to a 2-2 deadlock through seven innings Wednesday night at U.S. Cellular Field. Under normal circumstances, relief pitcher Jesse Crain would be summoned to shut the opposition down in the eighth inning of a tight game such as this.

Alas, Crain was placed on the 15-day disabled list earlier Wednesday with soreness in his right shoulder. That left Matt Lindstrom and Matt Thornton to pitch the eighth inning, and well, like most things this season that didn't work out so well for the Sox. The Orioles scored two runs off that combination of relievers and went on to collect a 4-2 victory.

Lindstrom (2-3) gave up a pair of singles, one to Nick Markakis and one to Adam Jones. With two on and one out, Thornton was summoned to face the left-handed hitting Chris Davis. The Sox lefty hung a breaking ball right in the center of home plate, which Davis lashed just inside the right-field line for a game-winning two-run double. Davis had homered earlier in the game and has 83 RBIs this year, so he's the wrong man to make a mistake to right now.

The Sox got their two runs on an RBI double by Adam Dunn in the first inning and a solo home run by Gordon Beckham in the fifth. The offense figures to be even more sickly than usual moving forward, since Paul Konerko was also placed on the disabled list Wednesday with soreness in his back.

The lack of hitting and shoddy bullpen work wasted a fine effort from Sox starter Hector Santiago. The left-hander needlessly threw 123 pitches in a meaningless game, but we commend him for a good performance nonetheless. He allowed just two runs over seven innings and totaled nine strikeouts. Too bad that's not good enough when you've got a bad team playing behind you.

The Sox will conclude this three-game set with Baltimore Thursday afternoon. It will be the rubber match. Jose Quintana (3-2, 3.97 ERA) will pitch for the South Siders. He'll be opposed by left-hander Zach Britton (2-2, 4.50 ERA). Game time is 1:10. You can watch on Comcast SportsNet.
