No Sweep For Us

May 22 vs Boston

Today's Game Rating:
1 STAR
Hector Santiago turned in a quality start, but there were few other positives in the loss.

Short Take: White Sox hitters failed to solve Boston right-hander Clay Buchholz in a 6-2 loss.

I guess it was too much to ask for the White Sox to beat two previously undefeated starters in the same series, huh? The South Siders came into Wednesday night's game looking to sweep the Boston Red Sox. They had already handed Boston lefty Jon Lester his first loss of the season earlier this week and were looking to do the same to right-hander Clay Buchholz.

Well, unfortunately, no sweep would be forthcoming.

Buchholz improved to 7-0 on the year by limiting the Sox to just one run on five hits over seven innings. Sox starter Hector Santiago (1-3) hung tough and kept his team in the game. After allowing two runs in the first inning, he settled in and tossed nothing but zeroes over the next five innings. He finished with nine strikeouts and allowed just three hits over his six innings of work. Alas, it was not enough on this night.

Trailing 2-0, the Sox got a gift run in the bottom of the third inning. Tyler Flowers reached on an infield single and Alejandro De Aza walked, putting runners at first and second with nobody out. Alexei Ramirez hit what looked like a sure double-play ball, but Boston got only a force out at second when shortstop Stephen Drew made a bad feed to the bag. Given an extra out, the Sox took advantage. Flowers scored on a groundout by Alex Rios that made the score 2-1.

The score remained the same until the eighth inning, when the Sox bullpen imploded. Boston got two in the eighth and two in the ninth. Brian Omogrosso was charged with the two runs in the eighth. Nate Jones was charged with two runs in the ninth, both of which scored with Donnie Veal on the mound. After the game, Veal was optioned to Charlotte to make room on the roster for John Danks. Veal will not be missed.

The Sox got their customary meaningless solo home run in the bottom of the ninth. Paul Konerko connected for his fifth homer of the season and first since April 28 to make the final score 6-2.

After settling for a series win, the Sox will take the day off Thursday. The homestand resumes Friday night against the Miami Marlins. The aforementioned Danks will make his first start in a Sox uniform since May 19, 2012. He'll be opposed by right-hander Tom Koehler (0-2, 2.82). Game time is 7:10. You can watch on Comcast SportsNet.

WSI's
Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
I'll tell you what Stone Pony, you were awesome in that 1980 All-Star Game. Nine up, nine down against some of the best hitters in the game. You know who else would have enjoyed that performance? YAZ!!!!
