WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Hey, We Won Today!

April 24 vs. Cleveland

Today's Game Rating:
It would be nice to see some offense, but the pitching remains solid.

Short Take: Alex Rios and the Sox snap a four-game skid with a 3-2 win over the Indians.

I wouldn't say the White Sox played a great game Wednesday. However, they did score more runs than the other team for a change. Behind a two-run homer from Alex Rios and some solid bullpen work, the South Siders snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Cleveland Indians at U.S. Cellular Field.

The Sox grabbed the lead in the first inning and led throughout the game. Alejandro De Aza worked a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Jeff Keppinger. Just two batters in, the good guys enjoyed a 1-0 lead.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth. That's when Cleveland loser Zach McCallister (1-3) made a mistake to Rios. He left an 0-2 fastball up and right over the center of home plate. The Sox right fielder took advantage and knocked it over the bullpen in left field for a two-run homer and a 3-0 advantage.

Could the Sox hold it? Well, starter Jose Quintana (2-0) breezed through the first five innings. But staked to a three-run lead, he ran into trouble in the sixth. He walked Cleveland's No. 9 hitter, Drew Stubbs, on four pitches. Then, he gave up back-to-back singles to Michael Brantley and Jason Kipnis. The Indians sliced the lead to 3-1 and had runners at the corners with nobody out.

At that point, it was hard for the Sox and their fans not to have that "Here we go again" feeling. Manager Robin Ventura went to his bullpen and summoned Nate Jones, who did an excellent job of minimizing the damage. He gave up a sacrifice fly to Mark Reynolds, but struck out Nick Swisher and retired noted Sox killer Ryan Raburn on a routine fly to left. Jones also worked a scoreless seventh inning.

Matt Thornton and Jesse Crain combined on a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Addison Reed pitched the ninth and earned his sixth save of the season, with a little help from his defense. Shortstop Alexei Ramirez made a nice pickup of a one-hop rocket off the bat of Lonnie Chisenhall and fired to first to record the final out of the game.

I don't know that anyone will be real thrilled with the Sox offense in this game. They stranded seven runners and went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. But hey, beggars can't be choosers. A win is a win, and we'll take 'em anyway we can at this point.

With the victory, the Sox earn a split of the rain-abbreviated two-game series with the Tribe. They will get set for a four-game weekend series with the Tampa Bay Rays, starting Thursday. The Sox will send left-hander Chris Sale (1-2, 4.50 ERA) to the mound. Tampa Bay counters with right-hander Jeremy Hellickson (1-1, 3.55 ERA). Game time is 7:10. You can watch on Comcast SportsNet Plus.

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
HAWK: I'll tell you what, Stone Pony, I still think this club has what it takes to win this division. STONE: I wouldn't get too excited, Hawk. It's only one win. Nevertheless, we'd be remiss not to give a Sox victory TWO THUMBS UP!
