Sox Walk-off to Washington

April 7 vs. Seattle Mariners

Today's Game Rating:
4 Stars
One star for each run the Sox scored to win the ballgame.

Short Take:   Chris Sale sailed his way through the Mariner lineup, pitching his second quality start in a row.

Coming off a 1-0 shutout to begin the season, Chris Sale was up against a Seattle Mariners team the Sox had gone 25-5 against since 2010. It seemed as though this could be an easy victory for Chicago, given how favorable the pitching matchup was for them. As it turned out, Sale and Hisashi Iwakuma matched one another pitch-for-pitch, so much so that 10 innings were needed to complete a 4-3 White Sox victory at U.S. Cellular Field.

Sale got off to a bit of a rough start, walking Jason Bay and surrendering a home run to former Sox farmhand, Michael Morse. Just like that, it was 2-0 Seattle and it looked as though it could be a long afternoon on the South Side. But fear not, Sox fans -- it was Alexei Ramirez and Adam Dunn to the rescue in the home half of the first, as Ramirez doubled and Dunn hit a shot that found the seats, tying the game at two.

The Mariners took a 3-2 lead in the sixth when Kendrys Morales, who's known to most as the former Angel who broke his leg celebrating a walk-off home run in 2010, put one in the seats off Sale. Seattle's lead was short-lived, as Alex Rios homered for the third time in as many games, re-tying the game. That's where it stood until the 10th inning when Addison Reed (1-0) came on to keep the score tied at three.

After retiring the first two hitters, Reed surrendered a double to Michael Saunders, then intentionally walked Morales. With two on, it looked as though the Sox would be in trouble, but Reed got Morse out on strikes, setting the stage for the home half of the 10th. Dayan Viciedo, who has gotten off to a rough start on the young season, blasted a pitch from Kameron Loe (1-1) deep to left, giving the Sox their first walk-off win of the season.

The Sox head in to their second off day of the season already on a winning note as they prepare for their first taste of interleague play. Beginning Tuesday night, the Sox will face off against the Washington Nationals for a three-game set. Jake Peavy (1-0, 1.50 ERA) will face off against former Sox prospect, Gio Gonzalez (1-0, 0.00 ERA) at Nationals Park in D.C. The first pitch is set for 6:05p CDT and the game will be broadcast on WCIU.
