Mariners Sink Our Ship

April 5 vs Seattle

Today's Game Rating:
2 1/2 Stars
A lot of action in this one. Sox dropped some bombs, but it just wasn't enough to overcome Seattle.

Short Take:   Jose Quintana scuffled, but the Sox offense almost pulled it out as the Sox lose in extra innings 8-7.

Jose Quintana was perhaps our biggest surprise last season as he was one of our best pitchers for much of the season. With John Danks still out, Quintana was called upon to take out Seattle in the opening game of the series. One mistake led to a big inning that put Quintana and the Sox in a big hole.

Franklin Gutierrez homered to right field, four pitches into the game, for Seattle to put them up 1-0 very early.

The Sox tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Paul Konerko.

The wheels came off for Quintana in the top of the fifth. With a runner on second for Seattle, Dustin Ackley hit a grounder to first. Konerko grabbed and threw it just behind Quintana, but Carlos dropped the ball while trying to catch it bare-handed. That turned out to be a costly error. Seattle eventually scored five runs in the inning highlighted by an RBI double from Franklin Gutierrez and an RBI triple from Michael Saunders.

But wait! The White Sox responded in the bottom of the fifth with four runs of our own. Alejandro De Aza hit a two-run shot followed by a solo homer by Alexei "Bonesy" Ramirez off of Seattle starter, some guy named Blake Beaven, to cut the deficit to 6-5.

The Sox tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on an Alex Rios RBI groundout to score Gordon Beckham. The game would eventually go into extra innings.

In the top of the tenth, Sox reliever Nate Jones allowed the Mariners to go ahead on RBI's from Kendrys Morales and Jesus Montero.

Down 8-6, the Sox had their chances in the bottom of the tenth. Seattle closer Tom Wilhemsen walked two guys in the inning before allowing a two-out RBI single to DeWayne Wise to pull the Sox within one. Wilhemsen then walked his third guy of the inning, Alexei Ramirez, to load the bases. However, with the bases loaded, Tyler Flowers struck out to end the game.

The Sox have their work cut out for them on Saturday April 6th. Felix Hernandez (1-0) will face Dylan Axelrod (0-0), who makes his debut for the Sox. The game starts at 12:10 p.m. and can be seen on CSN+

WSI's
Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
Hawk: "Stone Pony, our offense almost tore down Beaven's dam, so thumbs up for me!" Stone: "Hawk, I almost have to give one thumb up to our offense but one thumb down to Quintana. It just wasn't his night."
