Nightmare Against Kansas City: Part 10

September 9 vs. Kansas City Royals

Today's Sox Crew:
Demolition Crew
The Sox ran themselves out of three scoring opportunities in this ballgame, destroying their own chances to win the series.

Short Take:   Hector Santiago did all he could in four innings of work, and the bullpen picked up the slack, but the offense just was not there for the Sox the way it should have been.

Coming in to Sunday afternoon's game against Kansas City, the Sox had dropped nine of 14 ballgames to those pesky Royals. Their struggles against Kansas City continued on this cool, but sunny Sunday afternoon, sending those who attended "die hard day" home disappointed. The Sox dropped this one 2-1.

The game was scoreless until the 10th when the Royals got to Brett Myers (2-3). Myers, who'd gotten rocked in his previous outings against Kansas City this year, walked Billy Butler with nobody on and two out, then proceeded to give up three straight singles to Salvador Perez, Mike Moustakas and Jeff Francoeur, giving the Royals a 2-0 lead.

The Sox weren't going to go quietly, though. Greg Holland did the Sox a favor by walking A.J.Pierzynski to lead off the inning and Orlando Hudson, who'd pinch hit for Jose Lopez, with one out. With two on and only one out, Gordon Beckham came through with an RBI double, putting the Sox on the board and they looked poised to at least bring the tying run home. Unfortunately, both Alejandro De Aza and Ray Olmedo struck out to end the scoring threat and the game.

Truth be told, the Sox should have won this game in the ninth inning when they had the bases loaded and only one out against Kelvin Herrera (3-2), but Alex Rios grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning and send the game to the 10th.

Despite losing two of three to the damn Royals, the Sox still managed to increase their lead over the Tigers to two games, since Detroit spent their weekend in SoCal getting swept at the hands of the Angels. The Sox will continue their 10-game homestand with a four-game showdown against the Detroit Tigers. Jose Quintana (5-4, 3.68 ERA), who has struggled mightily as of late, will take the ball for the Sox and he'll oppose Rick Porcello (9-11, 4.58 ERA). The first pitch will be thrown at 7:10p CDT and you can watch the game on WCIU.
