WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

New Month, Same Results

September 1, at Detroit

Don't get the job done, but at least don't tease you with misguided belief they can

Short Take: Division lead cut to 1 game as Sox lose billionth game in a row to Detroit (that figure may not be accurate, I'm just rounding)

Francisco Liriano couldn't find the strike zone all night and the White Sox offense was grounded by  Max Scherzer as the Tigers beat the White Sox 5-1 to cut  the Sox's division lead in the Central to 1 game.

Sorry to be so blunt, but there's very little to take away from tonight's loss other than that.  In the marathon that is a baseball season, there are so often stories underlying the actual action on the field, but for at least one day in September at Comerica Field, what you saw was what you got.  For the Sox's maddeningly inconsistent lefty, tonight was an appearance by Mr. Hyde, as Liriano struggled to locate the plate all night.  He only made it through 4 innings, issuing 7 free passes and  4 more hits as the Tigers tagged him for 3 runs in 4 innings of work.  The 2 they scored in the 3rd inning to draw first blood would ultimately be enough, but Detroit added runs in the 5th, 7th, and 8th off a White Sox bullpen that was reinforced in numbers by the September 1 roster expansion, but perhaps not in effectiveness.  Brian Omogrosso, Leyson Septimo, and Duane Heath all made appearances tonight for the Sox alongside recent bullpen staples like Addison Reed, Jesse Crain, Nate Jones, and  Donnie Veal but nobody looked exceptionally sharp save for perhaps Heath who needed only 2 pitches to induce a Prince Fielder double play to end the Tigers' 8th inning after Reed struggled in a non-save situation.

None of that really mattered, though, as the Sox offense again was stuck in neutral, reverse, park, or perhaps Self-Destruct.  Missing the services of Adam Dunn, who was a late scratch with an oblique injury, the lineup was missing some firepower, but unless Dunn had a 5 solo HR night in him, it probably wouldn't have made much difference.  Dan Johnson made his White Sox debut going 1-3, but the Sox struggled with Scherzer all night, who allowed only 4 hits and struck out 9 over 8 innings of work.  The Sox didn't dent the Comerica scoreboard until they were down to their last bullet, when Orlando Hudson tripled off Jose Valverde with 2 out in the 9th to score Paul Konerko, but it was obviously too little, too late.

The Sox will have one last chance to break their hex in the Motor City in 2012 tomorrow night, but they must defeat reigning AL MVP Justin Verlander to do so.  Luckily, the Sox counter with their ace, Chris Sale, as the game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.  First pitch will be thrown at 7:00 PM Central time.
