An Unlikely Stopper

August 29 at Baltimore

The Sox used an Ax to complete their work Wednesday night in Baltimore.

Short Take: A strong outing from spot starter Dylan Axelrod helped the Sox rout Baltimore and put a stop to a two-game slide.

When your team is locked in a tight playoff race, it never hurts to get timely contributions from unlikely sources. The White Sox got just that from right-hander Dylan Axelrod in Wednesday night's 8-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

Axelrod was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday to make the spot start after Gavin Floyd was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow problem. The Sox were hoping Axelrod could give them five -- maybe six -- quality innings. He did much more than that as he worked 7 1/3 innings, allowing just a run on three hits to even his season record at 2-2.

After walking three batters over the first three innings, Axelrod settled down and retired 13 consecutive hitters at one point. He struck out five, his biggest punchout coming in the bottom of the third when he fanned Baltimore cleanup hitter Adam Jones with two on and two out.

Axelrod's cause was helped by some early offensive production. After getting limited to two infield singles in Tuesday's putrid 6-0 loss, the Sox hitters hung a four-spot on Baltimore starter Joe Saunders (0-1) in the top of the first inning. Alex Rios delivered a two-run double with the bases loaded. Moments later, a two-out, two-run bloop single by Alexei Ramirez finished off the rally.

The Sox added one run in the fourth inning on a two-out RBI double by Gordon Beckham. In the sixth inning, Beckham added a two-run single that made the score 7-1. Dayan Viciedo's RBI single in the seventh inning capped the scoring.

The bottom half of the batting order came through with strong production on this night. Beckham went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Ramirez tallied three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs. Viciedo added two hits, a run scored and an RBI.

With the win, the Sox broke a brief two-game losing streak and increased their American League Central Division lead to three games. Some unexpected help came from Kansas City as Bruce "Cy" Chen fired eight shutout innings in the Royals' 1-0 victory over Detroit. Thanks Cy Chen!

Be sure to tune in early for Thursday's finale of this four-game set at Baltimore. Things will get started at 11:35 a.m. CDT. Jose Quintana (5-2, 2.86 ERA) gets the start for the South Siders. He'll be opposed by left-hander Zach Britton (3-1, 5.59 ERA). If you're not working, you can catch all the action on WGN.
