BOOM! Take that, New York!

August 22 vs. N.Y. Yankees

Today's Sox Crew:
Chimney sweeps
The Sox got out the brooms and cleaned out the New York trash.

Short Take: Chris Sale strikes out 13 and the Sox complete a three-game sweep of the hated Yankees.

There are few things in this world more satisfying than sticking it to the haughty Yankees and their loudmouth, arrogant fans. So, it is with great joy that I report the White Sox completed a three-game sweep of New York with a crisply-played 2-1 victory Wednesday at U.S. Cellular Field.

Sox left-hander Chris Sale (15-4) was dynamite. He turned in one of his most spectacular outings of the season, striking out 13 and walking only one over 7 2/3 innings. The "mighty" Yankees managed but three hits against Sale, who had good command of his fastball and had both his breaking ball and his changeup working. New York had virtually no chance on this night, much to the chagrin of all the folks on Baseball Tonight. (BOOM, take that ESPN!)

The Sox took the early 1-0 lead in the third inning when Gordon Beckham doubled, advanced to third on a bunt single by Dewayne Wise and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Youkilis. Meanwhile, Sale pitched over a leadoff double by Mark Teixeira in the second inning and a one-out double by Robinson Cano in the fourth.

The only black mark on Sale's pitching line this night would be a solo home run by 498-year-old Derek Jeter in the sixth inning. No matter. Alex Rios got that run right back in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run off Yankee loser Phil Hughes (12-11). BOOM, take that Yankees! 2-1!

Sale finished his outing with a bang in the eighth as he struck out both Casey McGehee and Ichiro Suzuki. Suzuki was overmatched throughout the game, fanning three times. Sox manager Robin Ventura summoned Brett Myers to get the final out of the eighth. The veteran got his job done with a little help from Beckham, who ranged far to his left to make a fine play on a grounder off the bat of Jeter.

Addison Reed came on for the ninth and earned his 23rd save. He struck out Nick Swisher before giving up a single to Robinson Cano. Trouble brewing? Not at all. Reed struck out Teixeira, then induced pinch hitter Eric Chavez to bounce into a fielder's choice for the final out. BOOM!

The win allows the Sox to maintain their two-game lead in the AL Central race. Detroit defeated Toronto 3-2 earlier in the evening. No matter. I'll bet the Tiger fans are good and pissed off they didn't get any help from the Yankees this week. The Sox will enjoy an off day Thursday before welcoming the red-hot Seattle Mariners to Chicago Friday night. Jake Peavy (9-9, 3.11 ERA) will get the start for the South Siders. Left-hander Jason Vargas (13-8, 3.53 ERA) will go for the Mariners, who are riding an eight-game winning streak. Game time is 7:10, and you can watch on Comcast SportsNet.
