Slam It Shut!

August 21 vs New York

Today's Sox Crew:
Electricians
Youk's slam electrified the crowd and broke a tie game.

Short Take:   A grand slam by Kevin Youkilis was the difference as the Sox beat New York 7-3.

The work by both Kenny Williams and the Sox coaching staff cannot be understated. Both have done a great job with the team this year. With the emergence of Chris Sale and the resurgence of Adam Dunn, Alex Rios, and Jake Peavy, the Sox are poised to win the division. We can't forget about the acquisition of Kevin Youkilis for basically nothing. Having his stability and veteran leadership on the team has brought a nice balance. Youk demonstrated those qualities again when he launched an Ivan Nova pitch over the right field wall for a grand slam on Tuesday night. That proved to be the difference as the Sox beat the Bronx Bombers 7-3.

Francisco Liriano started for the Sox on Tuesday and gave up the lead after only one pitch. Future hall of famer, Derek Jeter, took a Liriano fastball out of the yard for a solo homer in the top of the first to make it 1-0 New York. It became 2-0 after Nick Swisher scored on a fielder's choice.

In the bottom of the second, Alex Rios scored on a sacrifice fly by A.J. Pierzynski to put the Sox on the board.

With the Yankees still up 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Paul Konerko turned on a high-inside pitch from Nova and took it over the left field fence for his 21st homer. That tied the game at 2-2.

Then Youk gave 'em a thrill in the bottom of the fifth. Alexei Ramirez doubled, Gordon Beckham walked, and DeWayne Wise singled to load the bases. That set the stage for Youkilis as he took an Ivan Nova pitch over the right field wall for a grand slam to put the Sox up 6-2.

After Russell Martin hit a solo homer for New York, the Sox answered in bottom of the eighth. A.J. Pierzynski tripled and Gordon Beckham knocked him in with an RBI single.

Brett Myers finished things off in the ninth as the Sox won 7-3 to take two of the first three of this series.

After a horrid performance in Kansas City over the weekend, the Sox will try to sweep the series against New York on Wednesday, August 22nd. Phil Hughes pitches for the Yankees and he will face Chris Sale for the Sox. The game will be at 7:10 p.m. and can be seen on both WCIU (The U!) and ESPN2.

WSI's
KW Appreciates The Game:
"I told Youk about a new carnauba wax that would provide a nice shine for his head. But, he makes my world shine with his play."
