Nightmare in Kansas City: Part 8

August 19 at Kansas City Royals

Today's Sox Crew:
Leveling Crew
Jose Quintana forgot to throw a shutout and the offense was anemic. End of story.

Short Take:   Though Jose Quintana did forget to throw a shutout, he cannot be blamed for the lack of run production by his team.

Coming in to Sunday afternoon's game in Kansas City, the Sox had dropped seven of 11 ballgames played against the lowly Royals. The problem is those "lowly Royals" look like the 2003 Minnesota Twins against the Sox with their cheap hits and pitching that has limited the Sox to barely three runs per game against them this season. This time, the pitching victim for the Sox was Jose Quintana, who received no run support whatsoever. While the Sox did manage to score a couple unearned runs, it wasn't nearly enough in Sunday's 5-2 loss.

Though he didn't figure in the decision, Jeremy Guthrie did his impression of Cy Young Sunday afternoon, following in the footsteps of his teammate, Bruce "Cy" Chen, who limited the Sox offensively on the previous night. Guthrie had a perfect game going until the fifth when he walked A.J. Pierzynski with two outs. Though the perfect game was gone, he still had a no-hitter intact. That no-hit bid lasted 6 2/3 innings until Paul Konerko reached on an infield single, which could have easily been ruled an error on Alcides Escobar.

The Sox best chance to score came in the top of the eighth, courtesy of an Eric Hosmer error. With Dayan Viciedo and Rey Olmedo having reached base on back-to-back singles, Dewayne Wise's ground ball to first base went right through the legs of Hosmer, which allowed Viciedo and Olmedo to score, tying the game at two.

Unfortunately, Jesse Crain (2-2), who'd relieved Jose Quintana to start the home half of the eighth, didn't have it. Crain gave up three earned runs on three hits in just one-third of an inning, making a winner out of the Royals closer, Greg Holland (6-3). The two runs the Sox worked so hard to score in the top half of the inning became meaningless almost immediately. The Sox went quietly in the ninth, which sealed K.C.'s sweep.

These three games in Kansas City were downright embarrassing for the Sox -- five errors and a grand total of eight runs scored; too bad Kansas City scored nine runs in one game alone! In 12 chances, the Sox have now lost eight games to the lousy Royals; blah!!! The Sox now travel back to Chicago, where they'll begin a three-game series with the A.L. East-leading New York Yankees. Gavin Floyd (9-9, 4.43 ERA) will try to pitch as well as he did in his previous outing and he'll be opposed by former Sox hurler Freddy Garcia (7-5, 4.68 ERA). The first pitch will be thrown at 7:10p CDT and you can watch the game on Comcast SportsNet.

WSI's
KW Appreciates The Game:
Thank God we're getting the hell outta Kansas City! I swear, if that team is the reason we end up losing the division, somebody's gonna pay!
