Danks For the Walk-Off, Jordan!

August 10 vs. Oakland Athletics

Today's Sox Crew:
Dynamite Handlers
The Sox blasted their way through the job today, with Viciedo, Pierzynski, Ramirez, and Danks all providing solo firepower on this job.

Short Take: Brandon McCarthy returns to the South Side and turns in a quality start, but Jordan Danks picks a hell of a time to pick up his first career home run, as he goes yard in the bottom of the 9th to give the Sox the 4-3 win.

After that laughable series against the Murderer's Row of Pitching that Kansas City has, the Sox looked to right the ship against the Oakland Athletics. Prior to the game, the Sox put Paul Konerko on the 7-day DL with concussion symptoms. Dayan Viciedo would DH, Dunn would man first, and Jordan Danks would patrol the left-field grass. Gavin Floyd took the hill for the South Siders, and in a surprise to absolutely no one, gave up three runs in the first two innings, putting the Sox in an early 3-0 hole. However, that's all Floyd would give up, as the rest of the game, he was in "bend but don't break" mode. He turned in the bare minimum for a quality start, giving up 3 ER in 6 innings, allowing 7 hits, walking three and striking out five.

However, the offense would decide to help Floyd out, starting with a solo shot in the second off the bat of A.J. Pierzynski to cut the deficit to 3-1. In the fifth, Alexei Ramirez went yard to cut the deficit to one. Finally, Viciedo would chase McCarthy with a solo shot of his own in the 7th to tie the game.

Each team's bullpen was solid up until the bottom of the ninth. Pat Neshek came in for the A's to try to get the game into extras, and for a moment, it looked like that would indeed be the case as he struck out Ramirez and got Viciedo to pop out. In stepped Danks to try to stave off extras. Jordan was never much of a power hitter, even in the minors, so no one at all expected what was about to happen. On Neshek's first pitch, Danks turned on the heater and blasted a no-doubter deep into the right-field seats. Josh Reddick, the A's right fielder, looked up and immediately started walking off the field while the ball was still in flight, that's how hard Danks mashed that ball. The crowd exploded in jubilation, as Danks rounded the bases and was greeted at home plate by an equally jubilant Sox team, who mobbed him at home plate to celebrate the 4-3 victory! Brett Myers would get the win, as he pitched a scoreless ninth inning. It was a big win, too, as Detroit defeated Texas 6-2, so Danks' heroics allowed to Sox to maintain their one-game hold on the division lead.

The Sox and A's continue their three-game tilt tomorrow, as Francisco Liriano takes the hill for the South Siders, and the A's counter with Travis Blackley. Hopefully the Sox can win in a less-dramatic fashion, and Liriano can keep up his solid pitching since putting on Sox colors and that the bruise he suffered his last start has no ill effects. The game starts at 6:05pm, and it's supposed to be a beautiful day, so go out if you've got nothing going on and have a few bucks to burn. Go Sox!

WSI's
KW Appreciates The Game:
"So, who wants Wise called up now? Have a seat, you're going to be watching Danks for a little while longer."
