Good Gavin Finally Reappears

June 20 vs. Lovable Losers

Today's Sox Crew:
Plumbers
After a couple of embarrassing losses, the Sox flushed this worthless Cubbie team down the toilet in the series finale.

Short Take: Gavin Floyd turned in his best start in over a month, and the Sox clinched the season series against the losers from the North Side.

It's about damn time Gavin Floyd contributed something positive to this team. The White Sox right-hander came into Wednesday's game against the Lovable Losers with a 1-4 record and a 10.38 ERA over his last six starts. This time, though, Good Gavin finally showed up and tossed 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball as the South Siders prevailed 7-0.

With the win, the Sox clinched the season series from the hated North Siders, four games to two. They also erased some of the sting from the idiotic losses that were suffered Monday and Tuesday nights.

The story on Wednesday was Floyd (5-7), who struck out four, walked one and allowed only four hits. His most impressive inning came in the top of the sixth. With the Sox leading 3-0, Floyd made a rare mistake and gave up a leadoff triple to Starlin Castro. He pitched over that in brilliant fashion, striking out both Bryan LaHair and Alfonso Soriano (who looks like a frog) and inducing Steve Clevenger (who?) to ground out weakly to second base. After Floyd escaped that jam, the Sox were never in danger the rest of the night.

Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham continued to slaughter Cubbie pitching as he went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, including a three-run homer off some left-hander named Scott Maine in the sixth. The blast increased the Sox lead to a comfortable 6-0. Beckham also had an RBI single in the fourth inning.

The Sox jumped in front with two runs off Randy Wells (1-2) in the third inning. After back-to-back walks to Eduardo Escobar and Alejandro De Aza, Beckham bunted the runners to second and third. Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko delivered back-to-back RBI singles to make it 2-0. Then, Beckham went to work with an RBI single in the fourth and his home run in the sixth. The Sox added another in the seventh when Alexei Ramirez singled home Alex Rios with two outs.

Sox relievers Matt Thornton, Jesse Crain and Will Ohman combined to close out the game. The trio retired all seven batters they faced, three by strikeout. The win sends the Sox into an off day on Thursday. They will welcome the Milwaukee Brewers to U.S. Cellular Field for the final interleague series of the season this weekend. Left-hander Chris Sale (8-2, 2.46 ERA) will start the opener Friday night for the Sox. He'll be opposed by a right-hander Sox hitters should be familiar with, former Kansas City ace Zack Greinke (7-2, 3.10 ERA). Game time is 7:10, and you can watch on Comcast SportsNet
