Rios to the Rescue

May 8 at Cleveland

Today's Sox Crew:
Road Pavers
Danks kept the Sox in the game and Rios' big hit paved the way for the Sox to win.

Short Take:   Alex Rios' huge run-scoring triple in extra innings propelled the Sox to a 5-3 win in Cleveland.

After getting swept in their doubleheader in Cleveland on Monday, the Sox needed to rebound badly. With a record of 13-17 after Monday, and on a three-game losing skid, the Sox have quickly been sinking in the standings. Outside of Peavy and perhaps Floyd, the pitching staff has struggled to maintain leads and the offense just isn't scoring enough runs. With that 65 million dollar contract looming in the back of people's minds, John Danks tried to get back on the right track Tuesday night against the Indians. In short, he pitched much better. Danks pitched 7 innings of two-run ball and Alex Rios hit the go-ahead triple in the tenth inning as the Sox beat Cleveland 5-3.

The White Sox got on the board early of off Cleveland starter Justin Masterson. Gordon Beckham singled and Adam Dunn followed that with a double. Gordon Beckham then scored on a Paul Konerko groundout to make it 1-0. A.J. Pierzynski would then single in Dunn for a 2-0 Sox advantage.

Danks ran into some trouble in the second inning but otherwise cruised through much of the game.

We added a much needed run in the top of the seventh. The Sox loaded the bases on singles by De Aza and Konerko, mixed with a walk to Dunn. A.J. Pierzynski got his second RBI of the night when he plated De Aza on a groundout to make it 3-0.

Unfortunately, the Sox pitching imploded once again in the bottom of the eighth. Danks allowed two singles to open the inning and was then relieved by Chris Sale. Johnny Damon hit a weak grounder off Sale, which was promptly booted by Alexei Ramirez for an error to load the bases. After a groundout to score Casey Kotchman, to make it a 3-1 game, the next batter was Carlos Santana. Santana made sweet music by hitting a line shot off of Sale's get-me-over fastball up the middle for a two-run single. The game was now tied 3 all.

Of course, as Sox fans, we were not surprised to see that happen. When Hector Santiago came in to pitch the ninth, I thought the game was over. Santiago has really struggled and his screwball has done nothing but screw over the Sox. Though he gave up two hits, he got out of it and the game went into extra innings.

In the top of the tenth, Paul Konerko got on base with a single. Alex Rios followed that with a beautiful, opposite field triple to score Paulie and make it 4-3. Rios would then score on a Bonesy Ramirez groundout to put the Sox up for good at 5-3. Both runs came off of douchebag Indians reliever Chris Perez, which makes it all the sweeter.

Future closer, Addison Reed, pitched a scoreless bottom of the tenth for the save.

Hopefully, we can salvage a split in the series. The series concludes tonight, May 9th, with Jake Peavy (3-1, 1.99 ERA) facing Jeanmar Gomez (2-1, 2.82 ERA). The game starts at 6:05 p.m. CST and can be seen on CSN.

KW Appreciates The Game:
"It was just a matter of time for John to start earning that contract."
