Thornton in Our Side

April 24 at Oakland

Today's Sox Crew:
Workman's Comp.
The Sox offense looked deflated and lost against good Oakland pitching as we managed only four hits and no runs.

Short Take:   Gavin Floyd pitched very well. However, the Sox offense could only muster four hits in getting shutout 2-0 to the Oakland Athletics.

Before Tuesday, the White Sox were winners of four in a row. Included in those four wins were Humber's perfect game and Peavy's complete game shutout of Oakland on Monday night. As Sox fans, we were starting to have a little swagger in our step. The offense, namely Rios and Dunn, have been hitting well and the pitching has been dominant. In the second game against Oakland on Tuesday night, could Gavin Floyd continue the trend of lights-out pitching? Well, he came pretty close as Matt Thornton couldn't hold their offense and we had no offense as the Sox were shutout 2-0 Tuesday night.

Young 25 year-old Oakland starter Tommy Milone had his pitching arsenal working. Between his changeup and cut fastball, Milone kept Sox hitters off-balance all night. Milone (3-1) pitched 8 strong innings, only giving up three hits, striking out five, and allowing no walks or runs.

Gavin Floyd was just about as good. Floyd (1-3) took the hard-luck loss in going 7.1 innings, allowing only two hits, two walks, one run, and six strikeouts. Unfortunately, his second walk of the game, in the eighth, would turn out to be the game-winning run for the Athletics.

With the game scoreless in the eighth, Daric Barton drew a leadoff walk for Oakland. With one out and one on, Matt Thornton came in to relieve Floyd. Oakland catcher, Kurt Suzuki, doubled to left off of Thornton to score Barton to make it 1-0. Eric Sogard then followed with an RBI single to score Suzuki.

With the score 2-0, Grant Balfour came in and pitched a scoreless ninth for Oakland to notch his fifth save in as many chances.

The Sox will try to take the final game of this three-game series today, April 25th at 2:35 p.m. CST. Chris Sale (2-1, 3.50 ERA) will face Oakland A's #1 prospect Jarrod Parker (0-0, 0.00 ERA). The game can be seen on CSN.

WSI's
KW Appreciates The Game:
"The cog in the machinery is our pitching. I am very confident Robin and Coop will keep that vital cog running as smooth as a baby's bottom."
