No Morel of This Please

April 17 vs. Baltimore

Today's Sox Crew:
Slackers
Sox offense watched Danks try to build the house by himself while they stood around and drank brewskis.

Short Take:   Johnny Danks deserved better, once again, but the Sox anemic offense couldn't pull through in losing 3-2 to Baltimore.

After Monday night's bullpen implosion, which of course I had the pleasure of seeing in person, the Sox were trying to right the ship on Tuesday night. John Danks pitched seven strong but ended up being done in by one bad inning. The Sox offense is continuing its anemic ways. Danks (1-2) allowed three runs in a three-run sixth for Baltimore to earn another hard luck loss as the Sox fell 3-2 Tuesday night.

Simply put, someone else needs to step up besides Paulie and A.J. Pierzynski. Here are five batting averages: .103, .118, .179, .342, and .387. The first three belong to Beckham, Morel, and Dunn, respectively, while the last two belong to Paulie and A.J. Yes, it is only April, but the Sox cannot continue to have three automatic outs in the lineup with two of them, Morel and Dunn, batting second and third in the order.

That trend continued Tuesday night. With the game scoreless in the top of the sixth and one on for Baltimore, Danks allowed a two-run homer to Baltimore outfielder, Nolan Reimold, to make it 2-0. Orioles shortstop, JJ Hardy, followed that with a solo shot to make it 3-0. That's all the Orioles would need.

The Sox came back in the bottom of the sixth. The Sox put two on with a Morel single and a walk to Konerko. A.J. then stepped up and smacked a double to deep right to plate Morel and Konerko to make it 3-2. Unfortunately, that's the closest the Sox would get. The new Cy Chen, this time Baltimore starter Wei-Yin Chen (1-0), would yield just those two runs before departing in the bottom of the sixth.

The last Sox threat came in the bottom of the ninth. Alex Rios walked and Dayan Viciedo reached on a throwing error to put two men on. Alejandro De Aza drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Of course, that meant it was up to Brent Morel to step up and be the hero. He proceeded to weakly ground out to third to end the game. Why the hell he wasn't pinch hit for, we will never know.

The Sox will try to get back on track Wednesday, April 18th at 7:10 p.m. Jake Peavy (1-0, 3.55 ERA) will be opposed by Tommy Hunter (1-0, 3.38 ERA). The game can be seen on Comcast SportsNet.

WSI's
KW Appreciates The Game:
Kenny would be very appreciative if we didn't have three automatic outs in the lineup at the top of the order.
