Porcello Too Much for Sox

April 15 vs. Detroit Tigers

Today's Sox Crew:
Architects
The plans were laid for a victory late, but the wrecking ball known as Valverde eventually demolished the Sox.

Short Take:   Chris Sale was shaky all afternoon, only lasting five innings, and Rick Porcello was too much for the Sox offense in yet another Sunday defeat.

One would think after all these years, a managerial change and fancy 1972 uniforms to sport on Sundays this season, the White Sox would somehow, some way, find it in themselves to win at least occasionally on Sundays. Then again, one would also think that the author of this recap would know better than to even hope for something like that! While the Sox did mount a surprising ninth inning rally of sorts, it wasn't enough against the Detroit Tigers; Sox lose 5-2.

The Sox bats were silenced early and often by Detroit's Rick Porcello (1-0), who had only thrown 31 pitches through five innings; his counterpart, Chris Sale (1-1) threw 101 in the same amount of time. Through seven innings, the Sox found themselves with only three hits, while Detroit had managed five off Sale. A home run by Gerald Laird of all people gave the Tigers an early 1-0 lead. Detroit added to that lead in the fifth with doubles from Jhonny Peralta and Laird. In the sixth, back-to-back hits by Prince Fielder and Delmon Young put the Tigers up 3-0. The lead seemed insurmountable.

Surprisingly enough, the Sox did something the 25,000+ in attendance hadn't seen in what seems like forever - actually put some hits together in the ninth and didn't give up! After a leadoff double by Adam Dunn off Tigers' closer Jose Valverde, A.J. Pierzynski and Alexei Ramirez followed with back-to-back singles. Dunn scored, but it just wasn't enough as Valverde retired Kosuke Fukudome and Dayan Viciedo to end the threat and the ballgame.

If someone would've told me the Sox would take two of three from the hard-hitting Detroit Tigers at the beginning of this homestand, I would've been thrilled. If only one of those wins would've happened on Sunday. Monday begins the second homestand of the season as the White Sox welcome the Baltimore Orioles for four. Phil Humber (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his season debut for the Sox and will oppose Baltimore's Jake Arrieta (1-0, 2.63 ERA). The first pitch is set for 7:10p CDT at U.S. Cellular Field and the game will be broadcast on WCIU.

WSI's
KW Appreciates The Game:
After 16 innings, the White Sox finally scored their first Sunday run of the 2012 season. At least this Sunday didn't bring another shutout!

Another donkey - Adam Dunn

While Dunn isn't cute & cuddly like last week's winner, he did have two doubles.
