One Final Punch to the Gut

September 28 vs. Toronto

Sound that fail horn.

Short Take: The White Sox collapse in the ninth inning -- a fitting end to a disappointing 2011 season.

Talk about an ending that fits the narrative. Just when you thought the 2011 White Sox were done taking a dump on their fans, they gave us one more turd to take with us into the offseason. The Sox gave up two runs in the top of the ninth inning to turn a 2-1 lead into a 3-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays Wednesday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field.

Happy Fan Appreciation Day!

Reliever Chris Sale (2-2) has had a good season overall, but he stunk it up in this ninth inning. He gave up a double and a single, then issued three consecutive walks (one intentional) to blow the lead. With the bases loaded and one out, Sale walked the fearsome Mark Teahen to force in the tying run. Then, he walked .188-hitting Adam Loewen (who?) to force in the go-ahead and eventual winning run. Thrillsville.

The bullpen implosion wasted a fine effort by Phil Humber, who struck out nine and allowed only two hits over 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander gave up a run in the first inning before settling in nicely. His curve ball was working well all day, and that accounted for the high strikeout total.

Unfortunately, Humber didn't get much offensive support. On the day hitting coach Greg Walker turned in his resignation, the Sox hitters sent him off in the usual craptacular fashion. Two runs on seven hits -- that's not going to win you too many games. Gordon Beckham did connect for his 10th home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth. The Sox took their 2-1 lead in the fifth when Alejandro De Aza (2-for-3) scored from first on a double by Alexei Ramirez (2-for-3). It's a good thing Ozzie Guillen is gone. Otherwise, Ramirez would have been bunting in that situation.

That lead stood until Sale imploded. The Sox had a mild two-out threat in the bottom of the ninth when Beckham (2-for-4) reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. But Juan Pierre lined out to right field to end the game and end one of the most frustrating years in recent memory.

A season that began with such high hopes ends with a embarrassing 79-83 record. The Sox finish third in the AL Central and now enter into an offseason of uncertainty. Who will replace Guillen as manager? Will ace lefty Mark Buehrle resign with the Sox? Are we looking at a full-blown rebuilding project for 2012? Or will there will be one more attempt at making a run with this veteran core? So many questions and so few answers.

We'll see what the winter holds, and we'll hope that general manager Ken Williams has something up his sleeve that will give Sox fans a reason for renewed optimism when baseball begin anew in the spring. See you in April!

WSI's
Ozzio's Game Rant:
I no give a **** about dees kids anymore, but Ramirez should have bunted in the fifth inning.
