Konerko & Morel Scalp the Tribe

September 8 vs. Indians

Levels Finished:
Winning Combination!

Short Take:   Morel smashes a three run bomb and a solo shot, while Konerko blasts the 10th grand slam of his career, as the Sox beat the Indians 8-1.

It was a night when former Sox fan-favorite Jim Thome would be honored for his four years in the black & silver and presented with a video tribute and plaque by Jerry Reinsdorf. However, the White Sox goodwill would not extend past the first inning, as the Good Guys destroyed the Cleveland Indians for the remainder of the contest behind the long ball power of Paulie Konerko and Brent Morel.

Things did not start well for the Pale Hose, as the Indians jumped on Sox starter Gavin Floyd by manufacturing a run in the first inning. Asdrubal Cabrera singled, stole second and then scored on an opposite field base hit by Big Jim Thome. After that token gesture of goodwill by Gavin to Mr. Incredible, the Tribe bats were shut down for the rest of the rainy night. Floyd would go 5.2 innings, giving up five scattered hits and a couple of walks.

Brent Morel tied up the game in the 3rd inning with a solo blast over the centerfield wall off Tribe starter David Huff. The real fun started in the 7th inning though. With the score still tied 1-1, Morel connected on an three-run bomb into the leftfield bleachers to put the Sox up 4-1. The decimation of the Cleveland bullpen continued, as Konerko connected on a grand slam four batters later (coincidentally after a nasty hit-by-pitch on Brent Lillibridge). Konerko made them pay, as the Sox batted around in the inning: Two homers, seven runs, and a 8-1 lead into the 8th inning.

The Sox bullpen shut down the Indians the rest of the way for the victory, with nice work from Ohman, Crane, Thornton and Matt Kinney. The win puts the Sox 8.5 games behind idle Detroit, while Cleveland drops 10 back (in third place) in the AL Central.

Oh, what could have been…
