WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Detroit Rocked City

September 2nd at Detroit

Levels Finished:
The Sox died before the quarter reached the video game machine's coin tray.

Short Take:   Danks got rocked, Verlander took a shutout into the eighth, Sox lose 8-1.

I read a statistic that Justin Verlander is 19-2 since May 1st. That's unbelievable. Even without his best stuff, he seemed to be toying with the Sox hitters during the game mixing a 90 mph fastball, curve, and 97 mph heater when needed. Verlander combined with two relievers to run his record to 21-5 as the Sox could only muster one run in losing 8-1 to Detroit.

Sox fans were rejoicing when we saw that the starting lineup consisted of no Adam Dunn or Alex Rios. A.J. Pierzynski came off the DL and took over the DH duties. As exciting as it was to see the young blood in the lineup, they were no match for superior pitching.

Sox starter John Danks had no chance in this one. On a hot and sticky night in Detroit, this game was over early on. In the bottom of the first, Delmon Young tripled to score Austin Jackson. Detroit added two more on run-scoring singles by Alex Avila and Miguel Cabrera making the score 3-0. As mentioned earlier, that's all Verlander needed.

Things got real ugly in the bottom of the fifth. Two batters in, Austin Jackson hit a two-run bomb to make it 5-0. After a Magglio Ordonez single, along with walks to both Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila, Danks' night was done. Josh Kinney came in to relieve Danks and promptly gave up a double to Jhonny Peralta to clear the bases to make it an 8-0 advantage.

With some help from Kinney, Danks' line for the night was 4.2 innings giving up nine hits, eight earned runs, four strikeouts, and two costly walks.

The lone Sox highlight for the night was a 443-foot solo bomb in the eighth off the bat of Tyler Flowers. That was the only real mistake Verlander made all night.

As another frustrated Sox fan, we could only wonder what might have been if the offense was different early on. So many squandered games. At 68-67, 6.5 games back, and currently in third place, the Sox are in no way going to win this division with 27 games left. Right now, I just hope they finish at least .500, which is a sad wish in and of itself. Now that it's September, it'll be interesting if anything happens in the offseason.

The Sox continue this series in Detroit Saturday, Sept. 3rd at 3:10 p.m. The game is on national TV, of course. Gavin Floyd will face Sox killer, Brad Penny. You can watch on FOX, and if the announcers are Buck and McCarver, just put the TV on mute.

Ozzio's Game Rant:
"Gardenhire trade Delmon Young to Detroit to pass along HGH to Verlander. That only way Detroit winning dis division. Otherwhy, I win manager of the year."
