The Tank Drops a Bomb With Flowers In Bloom

August 28th at Seattle

Levels Finished:

Sox jumped every barrel in fireballing Seattle pitching to the tune of 9 runs.

Short Take:   The Tank debuted by going yard and Tyler Flowers hit a grand slam to sink the Mariners and complete the sweep.

SHHH! Don't tell Kenny and Ozzie that both Dayan Viciedo and Tyler Flowers both went yard in the same game. That happened Sunday against the Mariners as Viciedo hit his first homer of the season in a Sox uniform while Tyler Flowers hit a grand slam to back a nice effort by Gavin Floyd as the Sox beat Seattle 9-3. Not only did it complete the weekend sweep over the hapless Mariners, it also moved the Sox above .500 at 66-65 for the first time in I don't know how long.

With Carlos Quentin on the DL, Viciedo was finally called up yesterday after much speculation by Sox fans, including myself, of when this was going to happen because of the atrociousness of the Sox offense for much of the season. Unfortunately, it took Quentin going on the disabled list to prompt this move. Whatever the case, if it means we have to play the kids the rest of the season, please do it! There was speculation that Dunn could have his plate appearances reduced. Duh, it only took, what, five months!?!? The fact that Brent Lillibridge has more home runs (12) than Adam Dunn (11) in almost 200 less at-bats is crazy. Ozzie, we have nothing to lose, keep playing Brent Lillibridge, De Aza, Viciedo, and Flowers!

I don't want to overshadow Gavin Floyd's pitching today. He held Seattle to two runs over 7.1 innings to notch the win to run his record to 12-10. It was a nice performance for a sweep we really needed to complete.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth. Paulie and Alexei Ramirez both singled to put two men on. In his Sox 2011 debut, The Tank, Dayan Viciedo, came up and took garbage Seattle pitcher, Jason Vargas, deep to center for a 3-run bomb to put the Sox up 3-0. After only one game, Viciedo is only 58 hits and 10 homers behind Dunn. Ok, I won't mention anymore about that.

We'd blow a hole in the Mariners' boat in the top of the sixth. With Paulie, Rios and Alexei on base, our big rookie catcher, Tyler Flowers would step up to the plate. Flowers promptly took Vargas out of the park to left field for a grand slam and make it 7-0 Sox. It was the first grand slam by a Sox rookie catcher since Miguel Olivo in June of 2003 vs the Scrubs. That would also be it for Seattle pitcher Vargas. We'd score two more times in the inning when Lillibridge and Konerko would follow with run-scoring singles to make it 9-0.

Gavin Floyd gave up a meaningless homer to Josh Bard in the bottom of the eighth to put Seattle down 9-2. Seattle scored one more time before Matt Thornton closed them out in the bottom of the ninth to end the game at 9-3.

The Sox return home Monday, August 29th to open a three game set against the reeling Minnesota Twins. And when I say reeling, they are complete garbage this year with a record of 56-77 and 17 games out of first. Nobody cares what the reason is why they're so bad. We need to put the hammer down and sweep them to make it six wins in a row. If the Sox want to make a run, they have no choice. Mark Buehrle (10-6, 3.19 ERA) will face Kevin Slowey (0-2, 6.84 ERA). The game starts at 7:10 and will be on CSN.
