If the Mariners Don't Score, Does Puget Make a Sound?

August 27th vs. the Seattle Mariners

John Danks led the way heroically up the ladders, throwing his own fireballs back at the Mariners.

Short Take:John Danks pitches a complete-game shutout as the Sox beat the Mariners 3-0 in Seattle.

Seattle owes its origins to the lumber trade. Its first visitors built their success on the skillful use of heavy wood. Saturday night the White Sox visited Seattle and skillfully employed lumber behind the even-more skillful pitching of John Danks in a 3-0 shutout of the Mariners.

Danks is really the story. Here's a guy who was 0-8 halfway through the season, mostly through no fault of his own. The White Sox in 2011, as we all know too well, have a hard time putting together a string of logical hits. Maybe John anticipated that there'd be few runs scored and figured that he'd have to pitch a complete game shutout to earn a win. He got ten strikeouts and scattered a few hits along the way. I guess you do what you have to do when you know your hitters won't hit much.

The scoring was brief but effective. In the Sox half of the fourth, Juan Pierre singled and was followed by another single off the bat of Alejandro De Aza, sending Pierre to third. Captain Paul Konerko singled home Pierre to make it 1-0 for our heroes, driving De Aza to third for good measure. Alexei Ramirez hit a deep fly to center that allowed De Aza to score, and now it's 2-0 Sox.

Danks kept pitching. Strikeout, groundout, etc. There was no more scoring until the eighth when De Aza came back with a just-enough home run over the right-field wall to make it 3-0 for the Sox. And remarkably, Ichiro didn't catch it.

That's about all there is to tell. It's a short story, but a good one. Danks doesn't need lumber to win games.

WSI's
Ozzio's Game Rant:
"Hey! I tell Danks, there won't be many #%#@*% runs, so pitch a shutout. Good managing, huh? Ha!"

John Danks

Could there be any other choice? A complete-game shutout with ten Ks. Not a bad night.
