WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Predictably Pathetic

August 24 at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

Team stinks.

Short Take: As expected, the White Sox look hopeless against Angels ace Jered Weaver.

On paper, Wednesday night's White Sox game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim looked like a complete mismatch. After all, the Sox were sending rookie right-hander Zach Stewart to the mound against Angels ace Jered Weaver, the American League leader in earned run average.

Well, guess what? This matchup was a complete mismatch on the field too as the Angels crushed the Sox 8-0. The South Siders never had a chance. They managed just five hits off Weaver and two Anaheim relief pitchers. They struck out 11 times and had only one inning where more than one batter reached base.

Stewart (1-3) had a rough second inning. He issued a one-out walk to Mark Trumbo, then allowed three consecutive hits after two were out. A single by Vernon Wells, a bloop RBI single by Erick Aybar and a two-run double off a fat 3-1 fastball from Stewart by Jed Mathis staked the Angels to an early 3-0 lead.

The Sox had their best and only scoring opportunity in the third. Brent Morel worked a leadoff walk. Two outs later, he advanced to third base on a hustle double by Alejandro De Aza. That brought Paul Konerko to the plate with runners on second and third. The Sox captain hit a one-hop shot that Angels' third baseman Alberto Callaspo knocked down. For most hitters, it would have been an RBI infield single. However, Callaspo recovered in time to throw the hobbling Konerko out at first base to end the threat.

The Angels made it 4-0 in the bottom of the third on a home run by Torii Hunter. At that point, Sox fans had that familiar sinking feeling: "This game is over."

Sure enough, it was over. Just for good measure, the Angels tacked on four more runs in the seventh inning off Stewart and reliever Josh Kinney to make it 8-0. Stewart was charged with seven earned runs over six-plus innings. He would have needed to throw a shutout to have any prayer in this game. I'd say he came up just a little shy.

The Sox are 2-6 against the Angels this year, so thank goodness this horrible series is over. And thank goodness Thursday is an off day, which gives everyone a one-day respite from watching this garbage. The Sox take the field again at 9:10 Friday night in Seattle. Jake Peavy (5-6, 5.06 ERA) gets the start for the South Siders. Seattle's Charlie Furbush (3-5, 4.64 ERA), one of only three lefties to surrender a base hit to Adam Dunn all season, gets the nod for the Mariners. You can watch on Comcast SportsNet.
