 2000 CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON

Division Champs!

(September 24, 2000)

Short Take:  We won this last June!

The 2000 Chicago White Sox are American League Central Division Champions.  They've been in first place for 159 day, longer than any club in franchise history.  They'll be there a few days longer too, because Cleveland officially is now incapable of achieving what Sox fans know they unofficially weren't capable of achieving weeks (even months?) ago.  The champs are dead;  Long Live the Champs!

The Sox came very close to sweeping Minnesota and winning their sixth game in a row to clinch the division championship.  Unfortunately Kansas City made the point moot beating the Indians while the Sox went extra innings with the Twinkies before falling in ten innings, 6-5 in 10 innings.  So what?  We won this division crown head-to-head against the champions last May and June.  They had their chances and they blew them.  Meanwhile our Sox took care of business, from end to end in a six-month season.  That's the true heart of a champion.

The Sox had their arch-nemesis on the ropes.  Joe Mays was finally cooked by the Sox, getting chased in the seventh inning after the Sox shellacked him for five runs and ten hits.

The Sox had their arch-nemesis on the ropes.  Joe Mays was finally cooked by the Sox, getting chased in the seventh inning after the Sox shellacked him for five runs and ten hits.  Some terrific hustle by Carlos Lee, scoring from first base on Paul Konerko's single.  Greg Norton and Charles Johnson both batted in runs too.

Sean Lowe probably secured the #2 starter's slot in the Sox playoff rotation with yet another terrific pitching performance.  He's the long-reliever who has been doing spot starts for the past month.  He had a one-hitter going before leaving after six innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

The rookies in the bullpen were probably a bit too pumped to be effective in this one.  Oh, well... the Sox bullpen is clearly one of the strengths of this team.  No need to fret about that!

Oh mercy, tomorrow afternoon's game will come far too early for our champion heroes.  I suspect more than a few of them will be in the clubhouse sleeping during Monday's game against the Indians.  What better way to spend your day in Cleveland?

Bow before your NEW American League Central Champions!
