Extra-inning suckage

August 10 at Baltimore

Adam Dunn is not athletic enough to dodge fireballs, jump barrels -- or get a key base hit.

Short Take: Jason Frasor serves one up in the bottom of the 10th, and the Sox winning streak is ovah.

Extra-inning games rarely end well for the 2011 White Sox. Wednesday night was no exception as the South Siders saw their season-best five-game winning streak come to an end with a 6-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

Sox reliever Jason Frasor (2-2) hung a slider right in the middle of the plate to .215-hitting Nolan Reimold, who crushed a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to end the game. With the loss, the Sox (57-59) fall to a hapless 5-10 in extra-inning contests. They remain four games back in the American League Central Division race as Detroit lost 10-3 at Cleveland.

If you're into moral victories, the Sox did overcome a 4-0 deficit in this game. Starting pitcher Phil Humber did not have good stuff and labored through six innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits. He surrendered home runs to both J.J. Hardy and Adam Jones and found himself trailing by four after five innings.

The Sox started to chip away in the sixth. Juan Pierre hit a bloop double, advanced to third on a deep fly by Omar Vizquel and scored on an RBI groundout by Paul Konerko. 4-1.

A two-out rally in the top of the seventh knocked out Baltimore starter Tommy Hunter and tied the game at 4-4. An RBI double by Brent Morel and a game-tying two-run single by Pierre highlighted the inning.

The Sox had chances to take the lead in both the eighth and 10th innings. They had runners on first and second with nobody out in the eighth. But a lineout to left field by Alex Rios and two pathetic strikeouts by Adam Dunn and Gordon Beckham wasted the opportunity. Both Dunn and Beckham fanned on pitches well outside the zone. At least Rios hit the ball hard in his at-bat.

A.J. Pierzynski doubled with two outs in the top of the 10th off Baltimore reliever Mike Gonzalez (2-2), but Rios hit into some hard luck again. His one-hop shot was right at shortstop Hardy, who threw to first to record the final out.

Frasor retired the first hitter in the bottom of the 10th, but then gave up a single to Chris Davis and the game-ending blast to Reimold.

The Sox now stand at 5-1 on this seven-game road trip, and they'll try to get back on track Thursday in the finale of this series. Mark Buerhle (9-5, 3.04 ERA) gets the ball for the South Siders. His mound opponent will be right-hander Chris Tillman (3-4, 4.85 ERA). The game begins at 6:05, and you can watch on Comcast SportsNet.
