Not Mush-Room For Error

August 9 at Orioles

Levels Finished:

The Sox got out to an early lead but it was cut by Oriole fireballs.

Short Take:   Morel and Quentin homers power Sox past Orioles

Yay Morel-mushroom puns!

The White Sox picked up their longest win streak of the season when they beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 tonight at Camden Yards. This five-game winning streak is the longest of the season, and the Sox won by a run in back-to-back games in Baltimore.

Gavin Floyd pitched a good 6.2 innings, drastically better than his start against the Yankees last Wednesday. He gave up three runs on seven hits and a walk. After giving up three runs in the fifth, Floyd got into a little trouble again in the seventh. With Felix Pie, the tying run, on third with two outs, Ozzie called on Will Ohman to get out Nick Markakis. He struck him out, and the Sox finished the inning unscathed.

Jason Frasor came on to start the eighth and pitched 0.1 innings, giving up a walk. Chris Sale came on and pitched 1.1 innings without allowing a hit or a walk. Sergio Santos came out for the last out of the game and picked up the save by striking out Robert Andino.

The Sox hit decently today. They only picked up seven hits, but it was enough to beat the Orioles. The Sox got on the board in the second inning with a solo homer from Carlos Quentin. It was his 24th of the season and 17th on the road. Brent Morel singled in Brent Lillibridge, and the Sox led 2-0 after two.

To start the third, Alexei Ramirez walked. Two batters later, after Ramirez stole second, AJ Pierzynski doubled to right, scoring Ramirez. The Sox scored their final run on a solo home run from Brent Morel in the fourth, his first home run since May 17 and his second of the season.

Third base umpire Phil Cuzzi ejected Orioles manager Buck Showalter in the bottom of the fifth inning. AJ Pierzynski made an excellent throw to third as Markakis tried to steal third. The replay showed he beat the throw to Brent Morel, but Cuzzi called him out. Showalter went out to argue and was promptly ejected.

Paul Konerko continued hitting as the designated hitter, but how long will he stay in the lineup with the continued pain in his calf? Konerko has told Ozzie that he wants to play, so the skipper has played him at DH, allowing him to contribute without having to play the field which could further injure his leg. Konerko will see a doctor when the Sox get back to Chicago.

The Sox hope to continue this winning streak, as Phil Humber faces Tommy Hunter. Humber has gone 0-4 in his last four starts while Hunter has a 0-1 record with a 9.00 ERA.

Brent Morel

2-for-4 with a solo homer. And a great play to get Markakis stealing.
