WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Camden Yards Comeback!

August 8, at Baltimore

Levels Finished:
4
Sox offense disappeared for most of the last 7 innings, but luckily the Orioles didn't seem to interested in winning tonight.

Short Take:  Sox blow early 4-run lead, but rally for 2 in the 8th to win series opener in Baltimore. Betcha didn't see that one coming.

Riddle me this... What happens when you get two mediocre baseball teams and make them play a game neither seems particularly interested in winning?  Well, I'd suppose you would end up with something similar to Monday's White Sox-Orioles game in which the Sox shot out to an early lead that they slowly fumbled away, only to score a pair of runs in the 8th inning that would make all the difference in a 7-6 win.

America's Hard Luck Champion, John Danks started for the Sox and took the no decision in a game in which he didn't pitch particularly well, but was still matched up against 5-15 Jeremy Guthrie, for pete's sake.  Still, the Sox handed Danks a 4-0 lead after 2 innings, more runs than they seemingly have scored for the southpaw in weeks.  The rally was most unexpected, as well, as it was keyed by Alex Rios, Adam Dunn, and Gordon Beckham, easily #1, #2, and #3 of most disappointing players this season.  Rios' new stance at the plate continued to provide dividends, as he went 2-4 with a double, run, and RBI.  Dunn, dropped to 7th in the order, went 1-3, with no strikeouts, a walk, a run, and an RBI.  Beckham's 2-run bomb capped the 4-run 2nd, and bookended the scoring on the inning with A.J. Pierzynski's lead-off, solo bomb to near dead-center field.

The Sox, however, went into their all too familiar, "All right, we scored a couple of runs early now let's coast to the 9th" mode, and the Orioles slowly chipped away.  They picked up a pair in the 3rd.  In the 5th, J.J. Hardy's RBI double would cut the lead to 1.  Meanwhile, after Beckham's 2nd inning bomb, Guthrie retired 11 of 12 men he faced from the 2nd to 5th inning, and the only guy who did reach base, Juan Pierre, was gunned down attempting to stretch a 1-out double into a triple, on a beautiful relay from right to second to third that did catch Pierre by a half-step.

The feelings of impending doom momentarily subsided in the 6th, even though the Sox made their 2nd out of the night at 3rd (poor Paul Konerko, who is barely running at this point), but a 1-out single by AJ Pierzynski just up the middle plated Carlos Quentin and buoyed the lead back to 2.  After a 1-2-3 sixth for Danks, Matt Weiters lead the 7th off with a double.  Robert Andino attempted to bunt him over to 3rd, however, his half-assed attempt came straight back to Danks on the mound, leaving Weiters, the plodding catcher, a sitting duck.  A simple toss to third beat the runner by several feet, however, Weiters was able to successfully kick the ball from Brent Morel's glove on his slide into the bag and everyone was safe.  Though Danks struck out Josh Bell, his night was done, pulled in favor of the right-handed Jesse Crain to face Hardy, who needed exactly 4 pitches to take Crain over the left field wall at the corner for a 3-run bomb that gave Baltimore it's first lead of the night.

The Sox responded, however, in the next frame facing Jim Johnson.  Paul Konerko drew a 1-out walk, was pinch run for by Brent Lillibridge, who moved into third on a single by Carlos Quentin, and scored on a sacrifice fly by A.J. Pierzynski to tie the game.  The next batter, Alex Rios, stayed hot, driving in Quentin with a single just under the glove of Bell at third to make it 7-6.  Crain and Matt Thornton combined to retire the side in the 8th and Sergio Santos earned his 23rd save of the season by striking out the side in the 9th.

The win is the 4th in a row for the Sox who, pathetically, matched their season high.  At 56-58, the Sox also draw 1/2 game closer to both Detroit and Cleveland who sat idle tonight before kicking off a three-game series at Progressive Field.

The Sox and Orioles meet again tomorrow night in Baltimore as Gavin Floyd will tote the rubber for the Sox against newly acquired Jo-Jo Reyes for the Orioles.  Reyes was recently claimed off waivers from the Blue Jays after allowing a combined 15 runs in his final two starts in Toronto.  Game time is 6:05 PM in Chicago and the game will be televised locally on Comcast Sports Net Plus.
