At Least We Can Pitch!

June 29 at Colorado

The Sox hitters continue to run face first into the barrels, but the pitchers are there to help them up.

Short Take: The White Sox continue to struggle offensively, but they were able to scratch out a 3-2 win in Denver.

White Sox fans are still no-so-patiently waiting for an offensive breakout that never seems to come. But you can take heart because the South Siders do have some pretty damn good pitching this year.

Mark Buehrle churned out yet another quality start, and the Sox bullpen continued its solid work in a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies Wednesday night.

The Sox once again generated little offensively - only six hits - but they were able to manufacture a go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning. With the score tied 2-2, Carlos Quentin and Paul Konerko opened the inning with back-to-back singles off Colorado closer Huston Street (0-2), placing runners at the corners with nobody out.

After Alexei Ramirez struck out (and looked like a fool doing it), Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski lofted a shallow fly to right field that was caught by Colorado's Seth Smith. Third base coach Jeff Cox gambled, sending Quentin down the line from third. Smith's throw short-hopped catcher Chris Iannetta and bounced away from the plate.

A good throw would have nailed Quentin, but with the Sox struggling mightily on offense, Cox made the right choice in forcing the Rockies to make a play. They could not. Quentin scored on the sacrifice fly, and the Sox went ahead 3-2.

Closer Sergio Santos then worked a 1-2-3 ninth to nail down his 16th save of the season and make a winner of Brian Bruney (1-0), who escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth by inducing Colorado's Ty Wigginton to ground into an inning-ending double play.

The Sox jumped ahead 2-0 with two runs in the fourth. Juan Pierre walked and advanced to second when Quentin was hit by a pitch. Konerko singled, scoring Pierre, and Pierzynski doubled home Quentin.

Buehrle pitched well, but could not hold the slim lead. Known steroid user Jason Giambi homered for Colorado in the sixth inning, and Wigginton went deep in the seventh to tie the score at 2-2. The Sox left-hander went seven innings, allowing the two runs on seven hits. He also provided a moment of levity in the fifth when he doubled down the right field line off Colorado ace Ubaldo Jimenez, then was promptly picked off second base before a single pitch was thrown to the next batter.

No matter. Things ended well for the Sox as they pulled within four games of Detroit and Cleveland in the American League Central race. The rubber match of this series will be played at 2:10 Thursday afternoon. The Sox will send Jake Peavy (4-1, 4.23 ERA) to the mound. He'll be opposed by sinkerballing right-hander Aaron Cook (0-3, 5.48 ERA). The game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet Chicago.
