Rain Be Gone

June 21 vs. Cubs

Levels Finished:

The Sox jumped out early but the Cubs hit them with some barrels to tie the game before the Sox came back.

Short Take:   Despite an almost- two-hour rain delay, Sox take Game Two from Cubs

After an almost two-hour rain delay where the grounds crew could barely keep the tarp down due to insane wind gusts, the White Sox ended up beating their crosstown rivals 3-2.

The Sox got off to a quick scoring start when Paul Konerko led off the second inning with his 21st home run of the season. This was the fifth consecutive game where Konerko hit a home run, tying a franchise record.

The Sox scored again in the third. Alex Rios doubled and moved to third on a Brent Morel single. Juan Pierre batted him in on a sac bunt to Cubs starter Matt Garza.

The Cubs narrowed the gap in the fifth when Carlos Pena hit his 13th home run. In the top of the sixth, Sox starter Mark Buehrle allowed back-to-back singles to Reed Johnson and Starlin Castro before striking out Jeff Baker. White Sox groundskeeper Roger "The Sodfather" Bossard talked to the umpire, and the rain delay started.

After play resumed, Jesse Crain came on in relief of Buehrle. Aramis Ramirez hit a sac fly to left, scoring Johnson and tying the game at two.

The Sox scored their final run in the seventh. Alexei Ramirez doubled to left, and AJ Pierzynski singled, moving Alexei to third. After Rios popped out, Brent Morel hit a sac fly to center, scoring Alexei and giving the Sox a 3-2 lead they would hold on to.

Neither starter picked up a decision, as Jesse Crain picked up the win and Jeff Samardzija picked up the loss. Sergio Santos closed the game for his 13th save.

Tomorrow night, the Sox and Cubs close out the first set of Crosstown Classic games. Jake Peavy returns from the DL and faces Doug Davis who is coming off a great performance against the Yankees.
