Who Wants to Bunt???

June 3 vs. Tigers

Levels Finished:

An all-around great performance as the Sox climbed to the top to rescue the princess

Short Take:   Not Juan Pierre! Pierre owns the 8th inning with a spectacular catch against the fence and then goes deep with a homer into the right field stands. The Sox win their 4th in a row!

Things are looking up for the Chi Sox. Friday night’s victory over division rival Detroit, coupled with a Cleveland loss to Texas, moved the Sox to within 7.0 games of first place in the wide-open AL Central. The win was the 4th in a row for the Good Guys, who turned the calendar to June and all-of-a-sudden see a wide open schedule full of home games and easy opponents. The future is so bright, the Sox have to wear shades.

Juan Pierre didn’t need shades to make his spectacular, game-saving catch in the top of the 8th. All he needed was a good read on Alex Avila’s bases-loaded screaming liner that took Pierre to the left-field wall. Pierre reeled it in, with the only damage on the sac fly being a runner scoring from third base, which was completely acceptable based on past misadventures the Sox have experienced with Pierre in left. That brought the Tigers to within one-run in the top of the eight, with the Sox on top 5-4. Never fear, Sergio Santos was called on to close out the inning en route to a, somewhat typical of late, 4-out save. As is Murphy’s Law in baseball, Pierre lead off the bottom half of the 8th, and he went all-Scott Podsednik on Enrique Gonzalez by cranking his first homer of the season into the right field stands.

The Sox took the lead early and never looked back. In the first, they loaded the bases without a hit, and Alex Rios earned an rbi with a groundout to score Pierre. In the bottom of the 4th, the big blast of the game was Carlos Quentin's line-drive homer into the leftfield bullpen to give the Pale Hose a 4-0 lead. The Tigers countered in the 5th when Casper Wells smashed a three-run Earl-Weaver-Special of his own, bringing the Tigers to within a run at 4-3. Brent Lillibridge remains on fire, as he added a solo homer of his own in the 5th, giving the Sox a 5-3 lead before the Juan Pierre heroics began. Brent Morel earns special praise on the night with three stabbing, diving Joe-Crede-like grabs at the hot corner, along with three hits.

Credit Mark Buehrle with the victory (5-4) and Sergio Santos with the save (#10). Andrew Oliver takes the loss (0-1). The Sox get Verlander on Saturday night and hope to move this season-high four game winning streak to five. Go Sox!
