That's More Like It

Sox looked like they'd be mauled by the Red Sox, but they found a way to crush the Sawx

Short Take:  Behind Peavy, Sox rebound nicely from disastrous series in Toronto by clubbing Boston.

Leave it to Ozzie Guillen and the White Sox to cram a month's worth of drama into a 4-game, weekend series in Toronto, but after letting 2 winnable games slip away, watching John Danks implode Sunday and get off to the worst start for any White Sox pitcher since World War II, and punctuated by a scathing Ozzie rant and quasi-English Twitter redaction, the Sox looked like dead meat heading into the last leg of their long road trip against the American League's hottest, the Boston Red Sox.  Instead, Jake Peavy  and the White Sox doused water all over the Memorial Day festivities in Boston beating the Red Sox 7-3.

Peavy brought his A-game to the mound again, sure 7 innings, 6 hits, and 3 runs isn't great, but the Red Sox have one of the deeper, tougher lineups in the game, plus the White Sox offense roughed up the Carmines' staff ace, Jon Lester, to the tune of 7 runs in under 5 innings, highlighted by a 4-run, 2-out rally in the 6th that turned a 3-3 tie into a 7-3 laugher.

The Sox roughed the Boston pitching trio of Lester, Dan Wheeler, and Michael Bowden for 12 hits with all 9 starters contributing to the cause.  The Sox jumped on the board early on a 2-run single by A.J. Pierzynski.  Peavy gave back a run in the 1st on a towering homer by Adrian Gonzalez, but Paul Konerko got that run back in the 3rd on a laser over the Green Monster, his 376th career homer, tying him with bi-Sox legend Carlton Fisk.  After the Red Sox scored 2 in the bottom of the 3rd to tie the game up, the Sox 2-out, 6th inning rally courtesy of an Alexei Ramirez duck snort into shallow RF and Carlos Quentin single up the middle, put this one out of reach.  Peavy was never really in trouble again and worked out of any mini-jams he faced, and the Sox got quality relief pitching from Jesse Crain and Matt Thornton in the 8th and 9th innings to close the Red Sox out.

Elsewhere in the division, the Indians were smoked by the Blue Jays and the Angels rallied past the Royals, moving the Sox back into third place in the Central at 8.5 games behind the Tribe.  Little steps, folks, little steps.

The second game of this three game set is tomorrow as the White Sox send Phillip Humber to the mound against Alfredo Aceves.  Game time is 6:10 PM Central time and will be WCIU, Channel 26, the U.

WSI's
Ozzio's Game Rant:
After this horse**** weekend, I got drunk in the hotel bar and went out and peed all over one of those ****ing statues outside of Fenway Park.  Okay, it's more fun than it looks.
