WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Same Story, Different Day

May 6 at Seattle

The Sox dodged barrels all the way up the first ladder and then fell right on their faces.

Short Take:   Sox waste another tremendous outing by Phil Humber as King Felix and the Mariners are just a little too much to handle.

Friday night in Seattle saw the White Sox embark upon a nine-game road trip, hoping against hope that they would come out of their 22-game offensive slumber for Phil Humber. With King Felix on the mound, all of him so round, there was small possibility of a turnaround.

The Sox were retired nine-in-a-row to begin the game, as there was trepidation that we might see another Liriano-type performance against the South Side Hitless Wonders, but alas Juan Pierre had a base hit to start the 4th inning. Pierre moved to 2nd on a bunt hit by the Cuban Missile and somehow scampered to third on a flyout by Adam Dunn. PK drove in the Sox first run with a sac fly to score Pierre for the 1-0 lead.

Humber was solid, again, battling for seven strong innings of 3-hit ball. Humber’s curveball was effective enough, and he seemed to keep the M’s hitters off-balance. Phil only allowed Seattle to cross the plate twice - both times in the 6th inning. Ichiro led off with a walk, was moved to 2nd on a Chone “Stealin’ Money” Figgins sacrifice and scored on Milton “Stealin’ Money Part II: Thanks Hendry” Bradley ground rule double. Justin Smoak, who was all over Humber’s stuff tonight, drove in Bradley with a double of his own to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead.

Carlos Quentin brought the Sox right back in the top of the 7th with a solo bomb just inside the leftfield foul pole, tying the game at 2-2. After Humber’s performance, the Wizard of Oz decided to let Matt Thornton work both the 8th and 9th innings. A dubious decision indeed, as Thornton barely escaped the 8th after Chone Figgins doubled and reached third on a steal. In the 9th, he wasn’t so lucky. Two straight singles by Jack Cust and Jack Wilson gave Brendan Ryan a chance to drive in Cust with the game winning hit (a single) to give the M’s the 3-2 win.

The numbers: The Sox loss drops them to 4-18 in their last 22 games, one of their worst 22 game stretches in the last five decades. Thornton’s earned run in the 9th actually lowered his ERA to 7.36, while his record drops to 0-3. Dunn’s 0-for-2 night drops his average to .149, while Alex Rios’ collar drops him to .178.

Only about 129 games until I'm the %&*#%^% Marlins manager! Viva Venezuela!
