Too Cold, Too Long, and Too Bad

April 16th vs. the LA/Anaheim Angels

This game was over early as the Sox were clobbered by barrels of Angel hitting and burned by fireballs of Angel pitching.

Short Take:The ballpark was cold and wet and so were the White Sox as they lost 7-2 to the Angels.

Hey, the Bulls won today! It was exciting -- they came back in the final minutes to beat the Pacers 104-99 after having been down through most of the game. The Bulls dug deep and found what they needed to overcome a well-disciplined opponent despite being lackluster through the game's first 44 minutes. A team with heart and smarts is a thing of beauty, and we're lucky to have one on the West Side.

Oh, and the White Sox also played today. It was not exciting -- they did not come back in the final innings and lost 7-2 to the Angels after having been down through the entire game. The Sox did not dig deep to find anything that would help them overcome a well-disciplined opponent because they were lackluster through the game's full nine innings. A team with heart and smarts could be a thing of beauty, and we would have been lucky to have one in Bridgeport.

But today it was not meant to be.

After a two-hour-plus rain delay the game finally started. The temperature hovered around 37 degrees for the duration of the game, and the dampness and the wind made it seem colder still. Your intrepid TBGR correspondent was at the game today and can report that it indeed was cold. Damn cold. Some mammals go into a state of hibernation in these conditions, and it was apparent that the White Sox are among that group of mammals. Playing without spark and with listless bats, the Sox hit into three double plays and scattered seven hits, two of which were solo home runs by Carlos Quentin and Paul Konerko that, while fun, were to this game like decorative flowerpots placed in a vacant lot.

Gavin Floyd did not have his A-game today. Not sure which game he had...we might have to go into the Greek alphabet to find it. Several ill-timed walks, eight hits, batting-practice fastballs that were hit for homers by Hank Conger and Howard Kendrick, and three wild pitches added up to six earned runs in six innings of work. Will Ohman came in and gave up another run in only a third of an inning. Tony Pena finished the game and stopped the bleeding, but by then it was too late to resurrect this contest.

The Angels' starter was Tyler Chatwood, a 21 year-old man of mystery. The Sox made him look like the master of mystery as they could only muster five hits off him while hitting into three flaccid double plays. Quentin's homer was the only run Chatwood gave up. Francisco Rodriguez and Rich Thompson covered the final two innings for the Southern California Seraphim, with Thompson serving up Konerko's superfluous solo homer in the ninth.

So the White Sox have completed their tragic march to .500, frittering away the early-season success that had made Sox fans quiver with excitement. But today the only quivering was among the frigid hundreds who stuck out the game in the arctic air of the ballpark.

So, how 'bout them Bulls?

"Hey! It's too #%@*#%* cold for baseball! Just ask Floyd!"

Paul Konerko

Got a ninth-inning homer that saved the team some dignity. Just hope the rest of the team picks some of it up.
