WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Rays of Saturday Sunshine

April 9th vs. the Tampa Bay Rays

Levels Finished:
All 5
Phil Humber was throwing fireballs and the barrels rolled harmlessly away in this well-played game.

Short Take:Phil Humber impressed and the Rays regressed, as the White Sox won 4-2 on a bright afternoon in Chicago.

After two days of cold and damp, the White Sox played their third home game of 2011 under sunny skies, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2. Or maybe we should refer to them as the Tampa Bay Flounders, more appropriate for their 1-7 record.

And that one win was an absolute gift given to them by the White Sox on Friday night in a game best forgotten by anyone who appreciates a well-played game. Friday night's game was not well-played by the Sox.

But yesterday is history, tomorrow's a mystery, and today we had a game worth writing about. Phil Humber, he of the spring-training vacuum created by Jake Peavy's absence, wanted to impress the customers with his magic curveball, and impress he did. In six innings of work he yielded but one run on four hits, with four strikeouts and a couple of walks. Nice work.

The Rays challenged with Wade Davis, whose numbers were close to Humber's, but Humber's numbers were encumbered by only one run-ber (sorry...couldn't help myself). The Rays drew the first run in the second inning when Dan Johnson walked and Ben Zobrist doubled him home. 1-0 Tampa Bay at that point.

The Sox came back in the third inning when a double by Brent Morel, a successful bunt sacrifice by Juan Pierre, and a sacrifice fly by Gordon Beckham tied the game. Then in the fourth, the Sox kept on a-comin' as Paulie-Paulie Konerko led off with a double. That double, by the way, put Paulie past Nellie Fox for White Sox career two-base hits. One day he'll get a statue too.

Then after walks to A.J. Pierzynski and Mark Teahen, Brent Morel hit a broken-bat blop over the head of the pitcher Davis, scoring Konerko. Now it's 2-1 Sox with the bases loaded, and Juan Pierre hit a slicing fly ball to the right-field corner that should've cleared the bases but was caught in a highlight-reel special by Sam Fuld.

Not much else until the seventh, when the Sox picked up insurance runs. Beckham singled, stole second, and went to third on a wild pitch. Alex Rios walked and stole second. Konerko hit into a fielder's choice that caught Beckham at home. Aw, nuts...but then Carlos Quentin walked and the long-overdue A.J. Pierzynski doubled in two runs, making it 4-1 Sox.

Chris Sale was brought in the ninth to do his all-arms-and-legs show. After an inside pitch that brought a baleful stare from Felipe Lopez, Sale gave up a solo homer to Lopez. Words were exchanged between A.J. and Lopez when he came in to score -- clearly Lopez believed that Sale wanted to put the leadoff hitter on base in the ninth inning with a 3-run lead...I think not.

The game ended peacefully though, as the Sox went ahead in the series two games to one. Maybe I should feel a little sorry for Tampa Bay.

A.J. Pierzynski

Hit the big double when it mattered most, and reminded Felipe Lopez that it's ill-mannered to make faces at opposing pitchers.
