The Rain, The Park, And Other Things

October 2nd against the Cleveland Indians

Dayan Viciedo
Paul Konerko

They call him the Tank, and tonight he showed us why, going 2-for-3 with an impressive home run. Paulie, you're killing me here...0-for-3 with two strikeouts?

Short Take:The Sox beat Cleveland 6-2 in a rain-abbreviated exercise in Chicago.

"Some days you win, some days you lose, and some days it rains." -- Crash Davis

It's my final TBGR of the 2010 run. The season has wound down to a disappointing end, but I was hoping for a big finish, a last hurrah. The Sox took an early lead tonight against the Cleveland Mediocres and were up 6-2 at the end of six innings. I thought I had it -- a dramatic game that would give me that big finish to my 2010 TBGR season. And then it rained. But hey, the Sox won 6-2 against the Cleveland Indians, and a win is a win, even if it's in a rain-shortened game.

This was Mark Buehrle's last appearance of the 2010 campaign and he gave his usual workmanlike performance: six innings pitched, two runs, both earned, on six hits. Good enough to win the game as the Sox bats were awake tonight.

The Sox drew first blood in the first inning as the first batter drew a walk. Juan Pierre got the free pass and moved to second courtesy of a fielding error by Lake Erie shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera on Omar Vizquel's grouder. With runners on first and second, Paul Konerko flew out to right and Pierre moved to third. Then as Vizquel stole second, Pierre saw a chance and ran to the plate to score, picking up one of those increasingly rare steals of home. 1-0 Sox after one inning of play.

The Sox second frame started in a similar way as Tyler Flowers led off with a walk, moved to second and third on a couple of groundouts, and scored on a wild pitch by Toons starter Carlos Carrasco. Now it's 2-0 Sox after two.

The Cleveland Bumblers tied the game in the third on a string of three singles, the last of which by Cabrera brought Chris Giminez around to score. The second run ambled home from third on a balk called against Buehrle, remarkably without Joe West being in town. With the score tied at two, the White Sox said that was quite enough and picked up three runs in the fourth as follows: Dayan Viciedo led off with a double, and after Flowers walked, Alejandro De Aza doubled, scoring Viciedo. Brent Lillibridge then singled, scoring both Flowers and De Aza. Now it's 5-2 Sox after four innings and it's getting cloudy outside.

The Sox picked up another run in the sixth on a leadoff homer by Viciedo, a cannon shot that took off just inside the foul pole in left. That young man can hit, and he hits hard. It's now 6-2 for the Sox after six innings, and the tarp came out. The players retreated to their dry clubhouses. The umpires lost interest after a while, and since neither the Sox nor the Ohio Irrelevants are going to the postseason, they called the game.

This wasn't really a season-ender for my Saturday TBGR run, but sort of a denouement, the kind of ending in which you look up at the end of a strange movie and say, "That's it?" Yeah, that's it. Tomorrow's the final game and I'll be there to say goodbye to Nancy and to imagine a brighter summer next year. Life really does go on, ready or not.

TBGR Diary:
The Sox got the win, but this is what happens when your team's not in contention: if it rains, the umps say the hell with it and you go home.
