Sweep in SoCal

September 26 at Los Angeles Angels

Immunity:
Tony Peņa
Exiled:
Alex Rios

Peņa's spot start for the injured Gavin Floyd was solid, while Alex Rios, who was called upon to pinch-run, was picked off first late in the game.

Short Take:   Tony Peņa pitched well and the offense came through when it mattered late in the ballgame, guaranteeing themselves a 4-3 victory and a winning record on their final road trip of the 2010 season.

After taking the first two games of this series against the mediocre Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Sox were looking for the sweep. It'd be a tough task, though, as Tony Peņa was making a spot start in place of Gavin Floyd. L.A. countered with Jered Weaver, whom previously owned the Sox, but now finds himself 0-2 against the South Siders this season. Some good starting pitching, combined with a clutch hit here & there, sealed a 4-3 victory for the Sox.

The first inning was a rough one for Peņa (5-2), who gave up all three of his runs in the Angels' first at-bat. Alexei Ramirez's lazy throw to first allowed Peter Bourjos to reach base, which led off the game and began the three-run rally. The scoring was capped off with hits by Bobby Abreu, Torii Hunter, and Hank Conger, and just like that, the Sox found themselves in a 3-0 hole.

Weaver (13-12) looked like he'd be tough to beat this afternoon, sending the Sox down 1-2-3 at a quick rate in the first. However, the Sox chipped away with a run in the second and one in the sixth before really getting down to business in the seventh. Juan Pierre's third triple of the season brought Mark Teahen around with the tying run and the eventual winning run came courtesy of Omar Vizquel's clutch single. The Sox held on to their slim 4-3 lead, as solid outings were turned in out of the bullpen from Scott Linebrink and Matt Thornton, who earned his seventh save of the season.

This afternoon's win at Angels Stadium gave the Sox a winning road trip and a record of 43-38 away from U.S. Cellular Field this season, which, given April and May, is pretty respectable. The Sox now come home to begin their final homestand of the season against the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians. Tomorrow night, Mark Buehrle (12-12, 4.27 ERA) will pitch for the Sox and he'll oppose Boston's Clay Buchholz (16-7, 2.39 ERA). The first pitch will be at 7:10p CDT from U.S. Cellular Field and the game will air on Comcast Sports Net.

WSI's
TBGR Diary:
Despite playing out the schedule, the Sox swept the Angels in SoCal, marking their seventh win in a row against L.A. for the first time since 1984.
