Bummer in Detroit

September 9 at Detroit

Omar Vizquel
Carlos Quentin

Vizquel went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Quentin didn't get a hit AND committed an error.

Short Take:   Sox drop third straight and fall six games back in division

The White Sox dropped their third straight game, losing 6-3 in Detroit. The Sox not only lost the game, they fell to six games back in the division, as the Twins had the day off. Sox starter Gavin Floyd gave up six runs, five of which were earned, in 6+ innings, while Tigers starter Rick Porcello went eight innings, giving up three runs to the Sox.

The Tigers got on the board in the first. Floyd walked Austin Jackson and gave up a single to Will Rhymes. Jackson scored on a single by Johnny Damon, and Rhymes scored when Ryan Raburn grounded into a double play. The Tigers scored again in the third. Rhymes singled to left, and Damon singled to right. Rhymes and Damon both advanced on a throwing error by Carlos Quentin. Raburn grounded out, scoring Rhymes, and two batters later, Jhonny Peralta singled to right, scoring Damon.

The Sox managed to get on the board in the fourth. With one out, Omar Vizquel singled to right and scored on Alex Rios's 21st home run of the season. However, the Tigers would tack on another run in the bottom of the inning. Alex Avila singled to right, and with two outs, Rhymes singled to right, and Damon singled to shortstop to load the bases. Raburn singled to second, scoring Avila before Brennan Boesch grounded into a force out to end the inning.

Both teams added another run in the seventh. To lead off the inning, Paul Konerko singled to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Porcello during Manny Ramirez's at- bat. Ramirez grounded out, as did Quentin. Konerko was able to advance to third when Quentin grounded out, and he scored on another wild pitch by Porcello. The Tigers got runners aboard on back-to-back singles from Damon and Raburn. Ozzie pulled Floyd in favor of Matt Thornton. Thornton got pinch hitter Casper Wells to ground into a force out. Damon moved to third, Raburn was out at second, and Wells was safe at first. Peralta hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Damon, and providing the final run of the game.

The Sox hope to get back on track when they return home this weekend. Kansas City comes to town for three games, and on Friday Mark Buehrle will face Bruce Chen. You can catch the game on Comcast SportsNet at 7:10pm.

TBGR Diary:
I'm not the kind of person who gives up on my teams until they're mathematically eliminated. That said, it's becoming increasingly difficult to watch them fall further and further back. Although a 7-3 isn't a horrible road trip, it's coming down to the wire.
