Cy Matusz Rides Again

August 25 vs. Baltimore

Immunity:
Erick Threets
Exiled:
Andruw Jones

It was nice to see a relief pitcher come in and pitch effectively as Threets did. Jones' futility with runners on in the second symbolized the night offensively for the Sox.

Short Take: The Sox cannot solve the Baltimore left-hander and miss a chance to gain ground in the AL Central race.

Chalk this one up as a missed opportunity. With Minnesota getting hammered all week in Texas, the White Sox had a chance to pick up some more ground in the AL Central Division race Wednesday night. Unfortunately, the offense couldn't get it done against Baltimore left-hander Brian "Cy" Matusz, and the Orioles came away with a 4-2 victory.

The loss keeps the Sox 3 1/2 games back of the Twins with 36 games to go.

Matusz, who is just 6-12 overall this season, is now 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in his two starts against the Sox. He allowed just three hits over seven innings Wednesday, the only blemish being Gordon Beckham's solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Sox only other scoring opportunity against the lefty came in the second, when Andruw Jones bounced into an inning-ending double play with runners on the corners. Blech.

Sox left-hander Mark Buehrle (12-10) was OK, but not nearly good enough. He walked the leadoff hitter in both the fifth and sixth innings, and it cost him both times. Buehrle had the great Felix Pie 0-2 leading off the fifth and lost him. That's inexcusable. Pie eventually scored the game's first run on a double by Matt Wieters. A two-out single by Corey Patterson plated Wieters to make the score 2-0.

Apparently, Buehrle didn't learn his lesson because he walked Ty Wigginton to open the sixth. Later in the inning, a sac fly from Wieters made it 3-0. Beckham put the Sox on the board in the bottom of the frame, but Buehrle gave that run right back by allowing a solo homer to Brian Roberts in the top of the seventh.

The Sox trailed 4-1 to the ninth and tried to get a rally going with two outs. Paul Konerko singled and scored on a triple by Carlos Quentin to cut the deficit to two. But A.J. Pierzynski looked bad in striking out on three pitches to end the game.

At least Minnesota lost and at least Erick Threets looked good in throwing two innings of scoreless relief. Beyond that, it's hard to find much to be happy about in this one.

The Sox will try to win the rubber match Thursday behind right-hander Edwin Jackson (1-0, 1.35 ERA ). Baltimore's schedule starter is right-hander Jake Arrieta (4-5, 4.90 ERA ). The game begins at 7:10 p.m. You can watch on Comcast SportsNet.

WSI's
TBGR Diary:
The Sox haven't won back-to-back games since Aug. 5. Not a good trend going there. Reminds me of May.
