Linebrink Crumbles, Offense Fails

August 22 at Kansas City Royals

Immunity:
Bobby Jenks
Exiled:
Scott Linebrink

Jenks pitched three scoreless innings of relief, whereas Linebrink couldn't record the third out in the tenth, costing the Sox the ballgame.

Short Take:   John Danks survived a tough afternoon, going deep in counts and driving his pitch count up, but, in the end, it was the bullpen that failed yet again.

This afternoon's game at Kauffman Stadium was the third in less than 24 hours for both the Sox and the Royals, but the price of this insanity was far greater for the White Sox. After two extra inning ballgames last night, the Sox bullpen was reeling and it was all but mandatory that John Danks give the club at least seven. He pitched six innings of two-run ball, but his offense failed to execute more than once, forcing extra innings yet again. The result was a 3-2 Sox loss.

The Sox took the lead early, courtesy of A.J. Pierzynski's RBI double, but failed to hold the one-run advantage. As soon as the Sox scored, Danks gave that run right back when Wilson Betemit hit his eighth homerun of the season. The Royals took the lead in the third when they had Danks on the ropes. Jason Kendall's RBI double drove Getz in from second, giving K.C. a 2-1 advantage.

In the fourth, the Sox tied the game at two when Paul Konerko singled, scoring Alex Rios, who'd tripled just prior to Konerko's at-bat. More than seven hours of baseball had been played last night, and the last thing this team needed was another extra inning contest. Since the Sox failed to execute time and again in the first nine, a tenth inning was needed once again. After Bobby Jenks pitched three outstanding innings in relief, Ozzie called on Scott Linebrink (1-1) to hold the Royals down. Though his is the least tired arm in the bullpen, it didn't show, as he failed to record the final out in the tenth. With Gregor Blanco on second, Jason Kendall delivered yet again, this time with the third and winning run for the Royals.

This was a putrid road trip in so many ways, lowlighted by three games that saw the Sox get walked off by their opponent; each defeat feeling more crushing than the other. Tomorrow is an off-day that's needed more than any other this season thus far, as almost every arm in the bullpen has been over-worked. Tuesday night, the Sox return home to U.S. Cellular Field, where they'll begin a three game series with the Baltimore Orioles. Gavin Floyd (8-10, 3.97 ERA) will pitch for the Sox, and Baltimore will counter with Jeremy Guthrie (7-12, 3.97 ERA). The first pitch will be at 7:10p CDT and the game will be broadcast on CSN.

WSI's
TBGR Diary:
On a six game road trip, the Sox went 2-4, with three losses by walk-off. From a towering Jim Thome homerun in Minneapolis to a ridiculous 6:10p doubleheader in Kansas City, this past trip was the stuff nightmares are made of!
