Another Bullpen Collapse; Betemit and Betancourt Own the Sox

August 21 at Kansas City

Immunity:
Sale
Exiled:
Santos

Sale looks untouchable, Santos looks like Bobby Jenks

Short Take:  The Sox lose a heartbreaker to KC in Game 1 of tonight’s twi-night doubleheader, giving up a late-inning lead while spoiling a decent start by Freddy Garcia.

Freddy Garcia gave the Sox all he had, but it wasn’t quite enough. Garcia labored through 6.2 innings before handing the ball over to Sergio Santos with a four run lead. One batter later, a KC grand slam destroyed any momentum the White Sox had, turning the game into a frustrating 11-inning one-run walkoff loss. The Royals 6-5 victory over the Sox pushes Chicago back to 4.5 games out in the AL Central. More importantly, the Sox bullpen has now been pushed to the brink, and they still have a minimum of 18 innings of baseball to play in the next 18 hours.

The Sox took an early one run lead in the 4th when Omar Vizquel knocked in Juan Pierre off rookie KC starter Phil Humber. The Sox expanded upon the lead with another run in the 5th when Pierre drove in AJ Pierzynski. The Royals cut the lead in half in the bottom of the 5th, however, when ex-Sox castoff Wilson Betemit homered to the opposite field on a hanging breaking ball off Freddy Garcia.

The Sox appeared to take total command of the game after finally figuring out Humber in the 6th. Paulie Konerko singled, took 2nd on a wild pitch, advanced to 3rd on a single by The Cuban Missile, and scored on a clutch two-out base hit by AJ. Gordon Beckham provided some insurance by knocking in Alexei and AJ, to give the Pale Hose a solid 5-1 lead.

Garcia pitched well through six innings, striking out four and staying out of trouble. Ozzie let him continue in the 7th, but Freddy missed his spots and loaded the bases. Sergio Santos came on in relief and gave up a grand slam to the first batter he faced: Yuniesky Betancourt. Perhaps Yuniesky is taking over as the Royals official Sox-killer, a spot Mike Sweeney used to hold.

The Sox blew a golden opportunity to take a 6-5 lead in the top of the 10th when Brent Lillibridge (pinch running for Konerko) slowed up around 2nd base (perhaps distracted by Joe West), and was thrown out at home plate by an eyelash. That’s as close as the Sox would get to winning this game. Although Chris Sale looked spectacular out of the bullpen (hitting 100mph on the gun several times and looking untouchable), Sale gave up a lead off walk in the 11th to Wilson Betemit. Bobby Jenks would come in to relieve Sale, just in time to give up a game-winning walk-off single to Yuniesky Betancourt with first-base open.

WSI's
TBGR Diary:
Worst-case scenario is unfolding right now. Let's hope Tony Pena can provide a miracle in Game Two tonight. Currently, the Sox are 4.5 games out.
