Bullpen Fails Miserably

August 15 vs. Detroit Tigers

Immunity:
Chris Sale
Exiled:
The Rest of the Bullpen

Sale faced four batters, retiring them all, but the rest of the 'pen blew a late lead, giving up eight runs from the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.

Short Take:   Freddy Garcia struggled, as did most of the bullpen pitchers, proving that an eight-run output by the offense just wasn't enough.

In his last time on the mound, Freddy Garcia had one of the shorter outings of his career. With it being the dog days of summer, the bullpen is taxed, and getting a good game from the Sweaty One was crucial. Unfortunately, Big Game Freddy didn't show up this afternoon at a sun-splashed U.S. Cellular Field. He was shaky at best in his five innings of work, and despite the offense coming back from a 5-1 deficit and taking a two-run lead, the bullpen squandered the lead late, resulting in a 13-8 loss.

Armando Galarraga didn't exactly have a stellar outing himself, giving up four runs in just five innings of work. A key inning for the Sox was the fifth, when three runs crossed the plate. Down 5-1, they rallied to put a three spot on the board, highlighted by Mark Teahen's RBI double and a single by Ramon Castro. All of a sudden, it was a 5-4 ballgame and the Sox were back in it. In the following inning, the Sox took a 7-5 lead off Detroit reliever Brad Thomas (5-1), courtesy of Paul Konerko's 29th homerun of the season. That lead was short-lived, thanks the bullpen's inability to hold the lead.

Things got extremely out of hand in the late innings, as the Tigers plated eight runs from the seventh inning on. In the seventh, Miguel Cabrera, whom the Sox had held at bay up throughout the series, took Sergio Santos deep, making it a 7-6 ballgame. J.J. Putz (5-5) got rocked in the eighth, giving up three earned runs on three hits, while walking two. With the Sox hanging on by the slimmest of margins, Johnny Damon hit a two-run double, and on the following play, Andruw Jones made a critical error in center, allowing Detroit's ninth run to come around and score. Tony Peņa relieved Putz in the ninth, and his outing pretty much mirrored that of Putz. A lead-off homerun by Jhonny Peralta made it a 10-6 ballgame, and the other three meaningless runs came courtesy of a two-run single by Don Kelly and a fielder's choice by Brandon Inge.

After an extremely disappointing 2-4 homestand, the Sox now find themselves three games back of the Twins, who never seem to lose. The Sox have a much-needed off day tomorrow before heading into Minnesota for what is an important three-game series up at Target Field. The Sox will send John Danks (12-8, 3.19 ERA) to the mound, in what will be a critical game, and he'll oppose the Twins' Scott Baker (10-9, 4.76 ERA). The first pitch will be at 7:10p CDT and the game will be broadcast on WCIU.

WSI's
TBGR Diary:
The offense showed signs of a pulse in this one, but the pitching let them down, giving up a baker's dozen. Making matters worse, the Twins swept the A's this weekend, dropping the Sox to three out of first.
