Jenks closes out comeback victory

July 28 vs. Seattle

Immunity:
Alexei Ramirez
Exiled:
Mark Buehrle

Ramirez had an error in the first inning, but he also did a lot of things right: A home run, a great defensive play and a key sac bunt. Buehrle? He gave up a homer to Chone Figgins. Need I say more?

Short Take: Power hitting and power pitching from the bullpen help the Sox rally from an early 5-1 deficit to beat the Mariners.

Maybe Bobby Jenks isn't finished after all. The Sox closer has been struggling recently, but he looked like his old self Wednesday night. Jenks hit 98 miles per hour on the radar gun consistently as he struck out the side in the top of the ninth to lock up a 6-5 Sox victory over the woeful Seattle Mariners.

Good bullpen work was a big reason for the win as Sergio Santos, Matt Thornton, J.J. Putz and Jenks combined to pitch four shutout innings. The four men allowed a total of just two hits and struck out five as a unit. Thornton earned the win to even his record at 3-3.

The Sox offense also clicked as they were able to bail out starter Mark Buehrle, who gave up three runs in the first inning and two more in the second to put his team in an early 5-1 hole.

The long ball allowed the Sox to escape that deficit. With two outs in the second inning, Gordon Beckham hit a two-run blast to cut the Seattle lead to 5-3. The Sox knocked Seattle starter Jason Vargas out in the fifth when Alexei Ramirez and Paul Konerko each hit solo home runs. Konerko's blast evened the score at 5-5.

The Sox used small ball in the seventh inning to take the lead. Juan Pierre worked a leadoff walk, stole second base and advanced to third with one out on a sacrifice bunt by Ramirez. Alex Rios singled past a drawn-in Seattle infield to put the Sox ahead 6-5. The bullpen did the rest.

Rios finished the game with two hits and two RBIs and Ramirez continued his strong play. The Sox shortstop went 2 for 3 and turned in yet another brilliant defensive gem in the third inning, ranging deep in the hole to rob Justin Smoak of a base hit.

With the win, the Sox have taken the first three games of this four-game set. They also remain one game in front of the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central race. The South Siders will go for the sweep tomorrow night with right-hander Freddy Garcia (9-4, 4.74 ERA) on the mound. Seattle will start right-hander David Pauley (0-2, 2.18 ERA). The game begins at 7:10 and will air on Comcast SportsNet.

WSI's
TBGR Diary:
The Sox are 9-0 at home in July. They've won 16 of their last 17 at the Cell. That works.
