Damn Royals, Damn Middle Relievers

June 30 at Kansas City

Immunity:
Alex Rios
Exiled:
Tony Pena

Rios had two RBIs tonight. Williams actually did get voted off the island, so we'll stick it to Pena here. He sucked. He deserves it.

Short Take: Randy Williams and Tony Pena implode in the seventh inning, and a late comeback by the Sox goes for naught.

Rejoice White Sox fans! No, our team did not win Wednesday night. In fact, the South Siders lost 7-6 to the Kansas City Royals. However, there is good news: Useless relief pitcher Randy Williams was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte after the game! Celebrate, good times, c'mon!

Of course, the damage had already been done in the series finale down in Kansas City, as Williams and Tony Pena combined to give up four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and put the team in a 7-1 hole. The Sox scored five runs in the top of the eighth against Royals ace and reigning Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke (4-8), but the deficit was just too much to overcome.

With the Sox trailing 3-1 in the seventh, Williams relieved starter Jake Peavy (7-6) and gave up a leadoff single to Scott Podsednik on his first pitch. Pena came on and poured gasoline all over that fire, allowing two more singles and a three-run homer to Jose Guillen.

Greinke was dealing through seven innings, and at 7-1, it looked like the game was over. Not so fast. The Sox opened the eighth with four straight singles by A.J. Pierzynski, Dayan Viciedo, Gordon Beckham and Juan Pierre. The Pierre hit made the score 7-2 and set the table for Brent Lillibridge, who cleared the bases with a pinch-hit, three-run triple. 7-5. Alex Rios capped the rally by knocking in Lillibridge with an RBI grounder to make it 7-6.

Mark Kotsay was robbed of extra bases leading off the ninth when Kansas City's Guillen made a sensational catch in deep right field. Following the defensive gem, Royals closer Joakim Soria settled down and retired the next two Sox hitters to earn his 20th save of the season.

Peavy saw his stretch of 21 consecutive scoreless innings come to an end in the first when Kansas City's Billy Butler hit a solo home run. Peavy worked six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Unfortunately, the quality start went by the boards because of the Sox inept middle relief.

The Sox (40-37) dropped two out of three in this series and fell 2 1/2 games back of first-place Minnesota. The road trip continues Friday night against the red-hot Texas Rangers. Freddy Garcia (8-3, 4.66 ERA) will pitch for the Sox. He'll be opposed by right-hander Colby Lewis (7-5, 3.28 ERA). Game time is 7:05. You can watch on Comcast SportsNet.

WSI's
TBGR Diary:
This loss doesn't bother me much at all. The Sox should have won Monday's game. Dropping that one is what cost them this series.
