Nine In A Row And Another Sweep!

June 24 vs. Atlanta

Immunity:
Gavin Floyd
Exiled:
AJ Pierzynski

Floyd pitched seven scoreless innings. He allowed two hits, a walk, and struck out seven. Pierzynski went 0-for-3. Other players also went 0-for-3, but AJ left five men on base.

Short Take:   Konerko blasts two-run homer as Sox sweep the Braves for their ninth win in a row

The Chicago White Sox continued their absolute dominance of the National League this season, as they beat the Atlanta Braves 2-0. The win was their ninth in a row and their third sweep in a row. It also brings their record to 13-2 against the National League.

Gavin Floyd provided another stellar performance, but the run support was not enough for him to pick up the win. He pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and one walk. In the second inning, he gave up a two-out single to Eric Hinske. In the seventh inning, he gave up a single to Chipper Jones with one out, and with two outs, he walked Troy Glaus.

In addition to allowing only three base runners, Floyd struck out nine batters. He retired Martin Prado twice on strikeouts, while Bobby Jenks struck him out for the third time in the ninth. Brian McCann and Hinske struck out twice each, while Glaus and Gregor Blanco were the only Braves batters who Floyd didn't strike out. JJ Putz came on in the eighth and didn't allow a hit or a walk, and Jenks recorded his sixteenth save in the ninth. Putz picked up the win, as the Sox scored runs in the eighth inning.

Despite not getting any runs across the plate until the eighth inning, the Sox offense threatened before then. In the fourth inning, Braves starter Derek Lowe loaded the bases with one out. To lead off the inning, Alexei Ramirez doubled to left. Lowe then walked Mark Kotsay, struck out Paul Konerko, and hit Carlos Quentin with a pitch. With one out, one would think at least one run would cross home plate. However, AJ Pierzynski struck out, and Andruw Jones flied out to left, leaving the bases loaded.

The Sox threatened again in the sixth inning. Kotsay doubled to right and moved to third when Konerko flied out to right. Lowe then intentionally walked Quentin. But with runners at the corners, Pierzynski grounded into a double play.

Luckily the Sox got on the board in the eighth. Takashi Saito replaced Lowe and immediately gave up a single to Juan Pierre. Ramirez moved him to second on a sacrifice bunt, and Kotsay flied out. With two outs, Konerko came to the plate. On the first pitch he saw from Saito, he launched a two-run homer to left before Quentin ended the inning.

This weekend marks the end of interleague play. The 37-34 White Sox, who are 2.5 games back of the first-place Twins who were swept by the Brewers today, welcome the 32-40 Cubs to US Cellular Field. Jake Peavy takes the mound for the Sox, looking for his seventh win. Carlos Zambrano is up for the Cubs and is looking for his fourth win. You can catch Hawk and Stone on WGN at 3:05pm tomorrow afternoon.

WSI's
TBGR Diary:
While I hadn't completely given up on the Sox season, I was doubtful they would make me smile a lot. I've completely changed my tune. I'm still cautiously optimistic, but I've been smiling a lot more since this win streak started.
